  • Transformation of an old maisonette: Big space living with home gym
Hi welcome to our home! Maisonettes are currently one of the biggest HDB flats in Singapore. Our current space boast a 147sqm(1582sqft) of living area. Growing up, I have always love living in this big space as my parents place was also a maisonette. It gives the landed property feel. So when the opportunity arises, we decided to seize it and move into our forever home. This is our second home, having previously lived in a 5 room BTO. This time we built it to suit our needs and ensure that the place has enough storage while also maintaining the big space feel. The photo above was the original layout of the EM. The whole place was being completely transformed as it was 36 years old and the previous owners have lived in it for over 20 years. Basically we bombed it 😁 tore down everything and rebuilt it from scratch.

We made some changes to the layout of the house for the first floor. The utility room was converted into the dining area. The original dining area was being transformed into a study area. As for the balcony, we levelled it so that it becomes an extension of the living room. We left the layout of the second floor intact.

Upon entry into the house, on the left is a full height shoe cabinet to house our shoes. The shoe cabinet also serves as a wall to separate the entrance from the dining area. To the right, we placed a full length mirror on the wall

As we move forward, you will see the kitchen. The kitchen is segregated into dry and wet kitchen. This is the dry kitchen and it serves as a snacking area and a place for quick warm up of foods.

The dry kitchen area is where we placed the fridge and microwave. The microwave is hidden under the countertop on a shelve. Next to the fridge is a storage cabinet with drawers for us to keep our snacks like a dry pantry. We use Vulcan(sinstered stone) for our kitchen countertops and backsplash because it’s stain and heat resistant. The original kitchen floor tiles were hacked and replaced with wood effect tiles.

Wet kitchen area Ample storage space made up of drawers and cabinets to keep the space neat and clutter free. The kitchen sink is a large 86cm stainless steel sink that is big enough for pots and pans. Even baking trays can fit in for ease of cleaning. The kitchen faucet is a pull down faucet to make rinsing easier. A nexen power rail with 5 removable electrical sockets is wall mounted. We use it to power small kitchen appliances.

The other side of the wet kitchen is also used as a laundry area. More cabinets were built to hide the laundry basket and also the rubbish chute. A Steigen pro was installed on the ceiling as a drying rack.

The good thing about this maisonette is that it has a common bathroom on the first floor. This bathroom is located next to the kitchen and beside the Steigen.

Right next to the kitchen is the dining area. We kept this place simple. A ceiling fan with light is used to light this area and keep it cool. The floor tiles here are the same as those in the kitchen area.

This was suppose to be the balcony. However as the previous owner had it roofed. We decided to level the floor and made it as an extension of the living room. A settee or bay window was built in this area that acts as extra seating area for guests. It also doubles up as a storage space.

Master bathroom is separated into wet and dry areas with glass shower screen. We chose to go with a wall hung sink and built a cabinet under the sink. This type of sink is easier to maintain as water is unable to pool around the area. We also decided to use big 60x60cm bathroom homogeneous tiles so that less grout will be used. Left over Vulcan for the kitchen countertops is used as shelves to put our shampoos and shower gels.
