The first diy entry partition was just an ikea shelf. We wanted a little separation from the entry area and the living area but also not permanent. So this is a satisfactory partition for us at the moment. 
We went smaller for the shelf when we added a dining area near to the kitchen. Still the same feel but it accommodate the dining area nicely.
