Hello everyone! This is our first post on Communa :-) we thought to give a rundown of our flat and in particular the common areas, which we spend most of our time in.
Our flat is a 5-room BTO, one of the last 5-room releases from HDB.
This is the view from our foyer into the living room.
This is the view of the foyer, from the living room! You can see that we left a small nook to allow ourselves and guests to sit down when wearing shoes. It has also been super convenient to put our stuff on the nook when we get back after a grocery run, so that we can take off our shoes properly.
The shoes are stored away neatly in the built-in storage.
We renovated to reduce the area of the spare bedroom and open up the living room space, as we wanted to have a large dining table as well as a kitchen island. The red lines show the walls we knocked down.
The same floor plan, with our island, built-in furniture and and planned furnishings included. The more observant of you guys might have noticed that there are two armchairs in our living room but the very first photo only had one. This home is still very much WIP! We’re on the hunt for another chair and would love recommendations.
A view of our island and the kitchen! This is to the right of our foyer.
The island is built-in and is covered in slabs of Grigio from Dekton. We are particularly happy with our Dekton island and countertops as the material is highly durable. We do not have to worry about stains from food or high heat (though we still use coasters)!
A view of our dining room (from the bedroom corridor). We wanted to show you guys the beautiful legs of our dining table - this was a custom piece by the Malaysian carpentry firm Dad’s Woods. The whole table is a single slab of Merbau Wood and should last us a long time to come.
The display cabinet in our living room is a surprise find from Taobao. It came unassembled but my father-in-law put it together with ease.
Our curtains were done with a Malaysian contractor who came in from Johor Bahru to take measurements and to install! We have day curtains for privacy while also letting in maximum light.
We do not have a television, but our projector is angled and calibrated to shine flat on our living room wall. The quality is decent and it could also connect to our Sonos sound bar for a more immersive experience.
How our projector looks! We like how clean and minimal our wall looks without a TV, and that we can simply transform this into a “movie screen” when we are in the mood.
We kept our bedroom simple — no screens, just an air purifier, air conditioning, a fan and reading lights. It’s important to be able to wind down after a hectic day.
There’s plenty of built-in storage! Somehow, we are already well on our way to filling it up.
That’s all for now. We’ll be following up with more posts on the other parts of the flat, and more details on our furnishing / renovation choices. See you!
