There's a lot of upkeep and maintenance that comes with owning a home (or is it just us) - and keeping our appliances clean and well maintained is just one of those many hidden chores that we (used to) neglect because... well it's easy to tell if you haven't done your laundry in weeks but it's not so easy to see if you haven't cleaned your washer in months.
So after lots of puzzling, procrastination and uh... self blaming, we've set up a schedule for cleaning these appliances that thankfully has been working for us for the last year or so :)
The water dispenser gets flushed with citric acid once a month - we add the citric acid into a full tank of water and run it through the dispenser a couple of times until the tank doesn't smell like acid anymore.
The remaining water is used to... flush the toilet cos #savetheearth!
Doing this helps to prevent any build up inside the dispenser from the natural minerals that occur in our water and may cause problems for the dispenser later on.
We also clean our dishwasher once every 3 months (or sometimes 4-5 if we don't use it frequently) with this dishwasher deep cleaner.
Apart from manually checking the drain thingy to ensure there's no stuck food/items inside, we run a load with the cleaner to refresh all the inside parts and remove any lingering weird smells (thankfully we haven't encountered much of these)
The washing machine gets cleaned too - with washer tablets and the complicated process of removing the little filter thing at the bottom to drain the water out (no idea how to describe this but there should be a round plastic cover at the bottom of your washer if you're using a Bosch like us).
Ps. did you know that a ton of dirt gets trapped in the rubber rims around your washer door? We never knew that until we cleaned it once and wow it was vile and disgusting :) Lesson learnt so we clean it pretty often now.
Dryer problems = having to remember to regularly remove the lint - we do this once a month, or less frequently depending on how much we use the dryer.
Sometimes we get lazy and put the lint compartment back in if we realise it's not really that dirty LOL.
Also fellow dryer owners wolud know that it takes a good amount of expertise to be able to clean the lint cover and compartment WITHOUT having lint bits fly around - it's a health hazard and also a skill we're still trying to master.
Fun fact: There was once we forgot to air our oven and it became real nasty :)
Fortunately it remained in good working condition and it only took three scrubs and deep cleaning sessions to remove the nasty smell T.T
After that incident we're a lot more proactive about keeping the oven clean - this means airing it for an hour or two at least after we use it, wiping it down and removing any food splatters and also running it on cleaning mode every month (with the same citric acid we use for the water dispenser!)
The inside of our oven doesn't loook good as new unfortunately, after two years of kitchen experiments and disasters, but we're just happy it has no smell LOL.
What are some of your favourite appliance cleaning tips? We'd loveeee to learn :)
