What I learnt from meeting 18 IDs

Over two months, we met 18 interior designers through EZiD, Qanvast, friend recommendations, and online searches. At one point, I seriously considered just moving in without renovating at all. 
If I could condense the multitude of ID personalities we met into one image. Each meeting taught us something new about what we were actually looking for – not just design style, but working relationship and communication style. 
What I'd Tell Someone Starting This Journey: 1. Be Way More Picky About Who You Meet (as picky as when you're choosing your tiles & laminates) I would have been much more selective upfront. Before scheduling meetings, I'd thoroughly screen their Google reviews and Instagram pages to see if their design aesthetic and vibe aligned with what we wanted. 2. Ask Francis' Favourite Question: "What's Your Most Memorable Project?" This was Francis' go-to question, and I initially thought it was weird. But in retrospect, it made perfect sense. Such a simple question reveals so much about their mindset and work approach. If they take pride in their work, they'll talk proudly about projects they enjoyed (you can see it in their eyes). Otherwise, it's something generic like "I like all my projects" with no examples. 
3. Your Partner and AI Will Be Your Best Friends Your partner is your player two - work together as a team! Mini appreciation post for Francis, who rode through all 18 ID meetings with me and diligently took notes. I'm pretty awkward at times and feel bad easily, so Francis being firm and keeping me grounded was crucial. Meeting 18 IDs meant 18 quotations to review and compare. Quotations usually come in PDF format, making comparisons incredibly tedious. Thank god for AI! Honestly, the quotation comparison became the easiest part of our entire ID search process. 
Finding the right interior designer feels like dating - just like how your partner makes you feel safe and at peace, you need an ID who can give you not just a beautiful house, but a home! PS: I asked Francis what he would do differently, and his reply was: "Don't meet 18 IDs again." 🤣
