When planning our home, every design choice came down to two things: aesthetics and comfort. One decision that often surprises visitors is our choice to skip traditional overhead ceiling fans altogether. Instead, we opted for corner-mounted ceiling fans and thoughtfully placed standing fans—and it has made a bigger difference than we expected.
Overhead ceiling fans are practical, but visually, they tend to dominate a space. In a home where clean lines, layered lighting and ceiling details matter, a bulky fan can interrupt the overall look.
We’re not big on Fengshui, but we strongly dislike the idea of placing an overhead ceiling fan right above our bed as it gives a feeling of being oppressed. I personally find it quite scary to see it spinning when lying down on the bed, fearing that it may drop on us anytime. 😅
We placed a Dyson standing fan at a corner of the master bedroom. Standing fans often get overlooked, but modern designs have come a long way. Sleek, minimal models can blend seamlessly into a space, and the biggest advantage is flexibility.
We like that standing fans:
• Can be moved based on daily activities
• Don’t require permanent installation
• Can be stored away when not in use
This makes them especially practical in bedrooms and multi-use areas where airflow needs change throughout the day.
Bonus tip: Remember to cater additional electrical powerpoints at the areas to place the fans! We already planned this right from the start of our home renovation so we made sure to have extra electrical points at every corner of the room.
In the living room we also opted for a Dyson purifier which not only purifies the air to get rid of pollutants but also circulates air just like a fan.
Both our master bedroom and living room have false ceilings which slightly lowered the ceiling height. We felt that having an overhead ceiling fan would make the floor-to-ceiling height even lower and make the house look visually smaller, which we did not like.
For our dining area at our island, our hanging lights takes the centerpiece attention. We placed a small corner fan from Acorn at the corner end. It may be small, but it has up to 6 speed modes and works sufficiently for the dining area.
By choosing corner ceiling fans, we were able to keep our ceilings visually calm and uninterrupted. This allows features like cove lighting, ceiling panels and downlights to shine without competing with a central fixture.
Our vanity and walk-in wardrobe area also has false ceiling, so we opted for a corner ceiling fan too. One misconception is that fans must sit in the centre of the ceiling to be effective. In reality, air circulation works best when airflow is directed across the room, not just pushed straight down.
While our study room doesn’t have false ceiling, we went for the same corner fan so that the overall look is smooth and calming.
Ultimately, choosing corner ceiling fans and standing fans was about designing for how we live, not just following convention. We wanted a home that feels airy and comfortable, while still maintaining a cohesive, modern luxury look.
This approach may not be for everyone, but for us, it strikes the perfect balance between form and function—cool air, clean ceilings and complete flexibility.
