Introducing the latest member of our family - this e-ink display from glintdisplay! Duck has been following the product for a while so we were very excited to get our hands on it when it first launched.
The display acts as a sort of 'dashboard' for our home that shows important information. We'd originally considered getting a Google Nest Hub - but we'd realised we wouldn't be able to fully utilise the functions - we don't have a smart home and don't intend to 'smartify' our home in the near future.
But one of the reasons why we liked this was because it's super Singaporean - you get a whole bunch of customisable widget built for life in Singapore! This includes things like local news, bus arrival timings and yes, even Toto and 4D results!
You can also customise the dashboards so it has different layouts that display at different times of the day e.g. ours will show the weather and bus timings from 8.30-9am on weekday mornings (because that's usually when we're heading out to the office) but in the evenings it changes to things like 4D results or stock tickets (because that's when the US market opens).
And here's the best part - you can even set it to display ESTIMATED TRAVEL TIME TO JB! Perfect for when we're contemplating whether to cross the border on lazy Sundays.
The set comes with a stand that lets it stand on any flat surface - or you can choose to wall mount it (there's an opening for a hook behind). The back of the display is pretty flat so I guess you can even 3M tape it up if you want? But we're too afraid to damage our walls so we just keep ours on a table or shelf.
One of the benefits of this is definitely that it has a super long battery life - we've had this for months now and we've only charged it once. It also doesn't have to be plugged in at all, so we don't need a dedicated power source for it.
The display is also the e-paper kind (like a kindle or kobo) so it's not glaring and quite easy on the eyes.
BUT of course this also means that it's not able to display full colour (only red, white and black), so it's not the best solution for if you want to use it as a photoframe to display your family photos.
It's also NOT a touchscreen so you'll have to use an app to configure the dashboard, layouts and all the details. but honestly the dashboard has been really easy to use and as tech noobs, we find it easier to configure stuff on our computers than on an actual device hahaha.
We've tried placing our display at several places - including our entryway and study - but we realised we like it best on the shelf above our coffee/water station!
Filling up our water at the water dispenser often takes a while, and that gives us just enough time to scan the news headlines on the display (or the stock market or TOTO results - juuuuustt in case we become millionaires HAHAH)
All in all, the display has been great - we love how low maintenance it is and how uniquely Singaporeans the widgets are. Ofc the functions are limited so it's not the most fancy display (no dancing animations like on Google Nest unfortunately), but for tech noobs like us who just want to know each other's schedule for the day, keep up with some news and see bus arrival timings, this display has been just right for us :)
