I'm constantly 'sculpting light' in my line of work in photography and filmmaking, call it an occupational hazard but it's become so ingrained that creating a cosy ambience was on my list of priorities for my home. I had an idea to use different sets of lights for day and night. 
There are plenty of small lights you can use to place around your home to create some mood. To me, the evening is when things generally wind down and I want my home to have a relaxing vibe, hence I tend to gravitate towards lights that have a warm colour to them i.e. your 'warm whites' or ones with orange and yellow hues. This naturally contrasts with the brighter tones in the day when it's brighter and less dim. Portable lights are great as you can charge them and place them in different parts of the house which provides a soft glow. This Verner Panton flower pot is perfect. 
This orange donut LED lamp from Ikea is perfect and I love them so much that I have two of them in my home. One is hung on the wall in the living room and the other is resting on a stool in my study. 
Here is my little cosy corner where I like to do my reading and decompress after a long day. The orange Varmblixt light from Ikea is perfect as it is not too bright and the orange hue always makes me cheery for some reason. I like to use accent lights and small lamps to brighten up the corners of the room and Ikea again has some fantastic options. 
This is a closer look at the small Simrishamn lamp. 
On the opposite side of the Varmblixt I have a small reading table that I light with a small lamp as well. At night this warm glow is very inviting and not overly bright for the eyes. 
There's another corner in my dining area that provided the perfect spot for this beautiful and classy chrome lamp from Ikea's Simrishamn range. 
I opted for the smart bulbs from Ikea that has a wireless switch you can place pretty much anywhere in the home. It acts as a wireless control to change the hue of the lights to whichever colour you want. This is just an example of using a different colour just to create the kind of vibe you are looking for. 
Last but not least, my coffee bar has a statement piece lighting which gives the space an effortlessly chic and minimalist look with a bit of a utilitarian vibe. I also augment the lighting in this space with a small tube light that I can mount magnetically on my fridge. These small touches go a long way in providing some moody and cosy ambience, if you're the kind that like to lounge around in the evening in dimly lit environments haha!
