A small learning point we picked up during reno was about the type of kitchen sink to install. We eventually chose a top mount sink because we were told that if an undermount sink gets damaged in the future, replacing it might require dismantling the entire sintered stone countertop. With a top mount sink, replacement is usually much easier since the sink simply sits on top of the cutout.
We also considered a flush mount sink, but it requires very precise workmanship to cut the countertop exactly to the sink’s dimensions, which increases the cost. In the future, replacements would also have to match the exact same size, which limits flexibility. Because of that, we decided a top mount sink was the more practical option for us.
We also opted for a bigger sink too! Even though we have a dishwasher, it is still very useful when washing larger items like non-stick pans. The bigger sink also allows us to place a drying rack over it, so we can soap the dishes continuously, place them on the rack, and then rinse everything in one go. After that, we let them drip dry on a drying mat.
At the corner of our sink, we placed a dish cloth hanger with multiple hooks. This makes it easy for us to hang dishcloths and keep them dry after use. We find this extremely practical!
A pull-out tap was also non-negotiable for us. It makes it much easier to rinse down food scraps and reach the corners of the sink.
This is how a top mount sink look! There is a raised edge at the sides which is sealed by silicone.
For bathrooms, we opted for both flushed mount sink (pretty seamless without gap) instead of top mount sink because we are afraid that mould will grow near the tap but we are not able to reach it easily. No regrets on this because we can swipe down the water super easily as everything can be seen.
At the end of the day, it depends on whether you prioritise aesthetics or ease of cleaning. We actually liked that top mount gives more options for sink designs, but since we went with a flush mount, we just played around with our sintered stone and laminate to make up for the aesthetics~
