Hello Communa friends, we were caught up with life for a bit, but we’re easing back into this warm community, and our home has evolved right along with us! We’re a couple who live in a 5-room resale HDB flat, and we’re also proud cat owners.
Over the past months, we’ve made a handful of small but thoughtful updates. Singapore homes are often tight and we could all use a little more space, so in this post we’re sharing some simple tips on how to make your home look bigger even if you’re working with a compact layout.

We switched out our previous dining chairs to these transparent ones that mirror its surroundings. This helps the dining area feel uncluttered and spacious. By choosing furniture with minimal visual weight, the space feels broader and more breathable.
Even at close range, the floating quality of transparent chairs proves how powerfully they reduce visual bulk.
They allow floors to remain visible, maintaining the illusion of more square footage while still providing full functionality. This transparent furniture style is a small design choice with an outsized impact on how open and flexible an area feels. Not to mention, easy to maintain too! It seems like our cat is also really pleased with the change.
A large arched mirror dramatically elongates the entryway by bouncing light and reflecting the adjoining rooms, creating the illusion of a wider, more open layout.
Positioned near simple cabinetry, the mirror becomes a functional statement piece that visually doubles the room. This trick works especially well in narrow or dim corridors, transforming them into inviting, airy transitions.
We overlapped our shoe cabinet with the statement mirror to create visual interest while also making the entryway feel wider. This works especially well in tight spaces. Having the mirror rest slightly in front of the cabinet not only adds depth, but it also keeps the mirror safer and more securely anchored.
Choosing a no-storage bed that’s lifted off the floor helps the bedroom feel more open and breathable. The visible floor space prevents the room from looking boxed in.
Even a few extra inches of clearance can make a surprising difference! Giving the illusion of a larger, more spacious layout.
And of course, a nice ceiling fan helps save precious floor space while circulating air far more effectively.
Paired with floor-to-ceiling curtains and a soft neutral palette, the space feels serene and noticeably larger than it actually is. The trick is to opt for full-length curtains even if your windows aren’t full height. They draw the eye upward and instantly make the room feel taller and more spacious.
We hope you enjoyed these little tips. Our home is always a work in progress, and we’re learning new ways to make the most of our space every day. Thanks for following along and hope to catch you in our next post!
