The Living Room: Where the Island Dreams Began

Every renovation journey starts with a moodboard. 🏡✨ Looking back, this is the exact inspiration that shaped the home I have today. I found myself naturally drawn to raw, woody textures and cool cement vibes—mostly because they’re incredibly low-maintenance! Instead of sticking to a rigid interior design "style," I wanted a cozy, freestyle space that feels bright, open, and full of natural light. When we designed these initial space mockups, our motto was literally "just do it"—zero budget considerations. We threw in textured wallpaper, a massive custom bench stretching the entire length of the window, and a sleek planter box built right into the pillar. But looking at the final rendering put together... it hit me. It feels exactly like an office. Specifically, my office. 🏢😅 Needless to say, some of these things have got to go. Time to cut back, save my wallet, and bring the cozy home vibes back! 🛋️❌ 
Design iterations are all about balancing aesthetics with reality. 📐🛠️ My ID originally suggested wrapping the entire space—including the ceiling—in wood panels. While the concept looked incredible, thinking about long-term maintenance made us hesitate. We ultimately chose to remove the ceiling woodwork in this round. Not only does it make the home much more practical to live in, but it also cut down our renovation costs significantly. Win-win! 🪵⚖️ 
When we were planning the house, we wanted to do something a little crazy. We needed a major statement piece, so we went with a floating kitchen island—right where it’s the first thing you see when you walk through the door. 🌌✨ Our running joke back then was, "Let's see how gravity handles this table in 5 years." ⏳👀 Well, it's officially been 5 years... and we won! Gravity: 0, Floating Island: 1. 🏆 Structures still holding strong! 
Navigating budget constraints during a build means knowing where to compromise. 📐🛠️ We ultimately decided to remove the full-length window bench from the plans to save on costs. In its place, we opted for a single side nook. It keeps the space feeling open, cuts down on material costs, and still gives us that perfect dedicated corner to relax. 🌿🪟 
Flashback to 5 years ago! ⏳✨ When I first moved in, I intentionally kept the space completely blank. I wanted to live in it first, see our daily routines, and figure out exactly what we needed before adding any furniture or decor.
