here’s why this dumbbell layout works so much better for our lifestyle:
we hacked all the walls that were there!
& reconfigured to a layout that works for us
🤫 privacy between the two rooms
our rooms no longer share walls, which means significantly less noise travel and much better sound privacy. it also gives both spaces a stronger sense of separation — great for different sleep schedules, work calls, or just wanting your own quiet zone.
🚶♀️ a functional corridor (no wasted walkway space)
instead of a long corridor that’s just… there, we rethought it as usable space. the circulation now serves a purpose and contributes to the home, rather than feeling like dead square footage you just walk through.
🎐 fluid spaces from kitchen → dining → living
with an open kitchen concept, we wanted everything to feel connected. the new layout creates a seamless flow that makes the home feel more spacious, social, and practical — whether we’re cooking, hosting, or just moving around day to day.
people have told us to think twice due to the costs that come with hacking and that this might affect resale value or limit future planning. while they're not wrong to raise those concerns, but we did what we felt was best for us so do consider all options before deciding!
we thought long and hard before deciding on this layout so feel free to drop any questions you have and I'm happy to answer! 👀✨
