Sharing some reno mistakes we made during renovations and decorating our home, so that hopefully you don’t make these same mistakes too! 😅
Starting with our bathroom…
1️⃣ No Built-in Shower Shelf 🚿
When we had built up a new wall for our common bathroom, we didn’t think to add in any built-in shelving in the wall which would have saved shower space.
Now we have to use either a drilled in corner shelf or a hanging shower caddy.
2️⃣ Wrong Height for Foyer Seating Zone 🪑
Our ID designed our foyer space to have a cute seating area to sit and put on our shoes next to the cabinets. We liked the idea and went ahead with it. When we received the carpentry measurements, we didn’t think much of the height of the seat (60cm) as we assumed it was the generic measurement used… (normal is 43-48cm) so unfortunately we are only short to average height people so it is too tall for us, and we have to sit at the edge when putting on shoes, or when fully seated in, D’s feet dangle 😅🥲
3️⃣ Not planning electrical points well enough before the meeting with the electrician 🔌⚡️
Here’s a photo mid-renovation…notice where our power outlets are?
Although in our defence, we were told that the electrician would help us plan on the day itself, but when we actually met, it was more of him asking us “So you want to keep the (existing) point or not?” and “This one can” and “No need la”… and also quite pressuring on the spot… So do plan ahead as much as you can!!
Unfortunately, it ended up with some mistakes, like an power outlet just by our sink, and one that we absolutely had to remove partway during the renovations as there was an outlet sticking right above our stove area. These happened because changes were made only after the electrical planning meeting which pushed our sink and stove downwards to accommodate for our fridge size too.
4️⃣ Buying BAMBOO furniture!! 🎋
Although these can be changed out fairly easily, it’s still sad that money was sunk in to buy certain pieces, only for it to end up growing mould 😢 even on pieces that are in places that wouldn’t seem to have much humidity, such as our TV console in our living room
We have had to throw out our bamboo shoe racks, and considering changing our IKEA common bathroom mirror and TV console.
Warning to y’all to NOT buy bamboo items!
5️⃣ Not planning for a hot water pipe to our kitchen faucet 🚰
This one might seem funny, but we genuinely didn’t know that you had to specify that we wanted hot water for our kitchen tap, as D’s family home had it and she assumed that was how it always is… So we have installed a hot&cold kitchen tap, that only supplies cold water, so we have to boil water when we need to clean off very oily items 😂😅
