When was the last time you had a conversations about dustbins?
For us... we never discussed it during our reno because it simply slipped our mind. And now we have these very random dustbins all over the house.
If we could turn back time, we'd definitely have given more thought to where/how we'd like to place our dustbins so they can look a little more aesthetic and a little less out of place.
So here are some of the 'trashy' lessons we've learnt about dustbins over the past 2 years:
A kitchen bin is a must have, but if you've read our previous posts about the great dishwasher and space struggle in our kitchen, you might have realised that space was REALLY tight in our kitchen, especially at the cooking-prepping area!
This is why we ended up with a small hanging dustbin - it's space saving and very convenient to throw food remnants and cooking-related trash. Unpopular opinion, but we'd actually recommend a small kitchen bin like this WITHOUT A LID - it forces us to empty the bin very regularly so we don't have rotting food collecting in there. It's also easier to throw stuff in while food prepping because you don't need an extra hand to open the lid.
Bathroom bins are also necessary - but we forgot to allocate any countertop space for it so thank goodness we found a tiny bin that fit right on the edge of our vanity!
We also considered larger bins but we didn't want to have any items on the ground to facilitate easier washing of the toilet floor. Unlike kitchen bins, we would highly recommend a bathroom bin with a lid so you don't have to look at bathroom trash all day :)
Our bedroom is one of the places where we have an actual, proper sized dustbin - this was originally meant to be the living room bin until we realised we don't really have living room trash... so it became the study room bin for a bit, and eventually ended up as the bedroom bin.
Fun fact - the bin liner we're using here is actually the packaging of our toilet paper! We keep the big plastic casing from toilet paper, tissue paper and kitchen towels to reuse as big handy bin bags cos #savetheearth
The study room bin... is frankly an embarrassment because we've been living here for two years and still have yet to figure out the best solution for this.
At the moment, it's a random plastic bag attached to a hook at the side of the desk. It's good because we can change the bag easily and even use bigger bags if we anticipate more trash, but... it's also very ugly LOL.
But one rule that we've implemented is that the trash for this bin is strictly things that don't 'smell' - usually post-it notes, pen refills, old receipts, etc. We sometimes eat/drink in the study, but all food related trash is brought out to be disposed in the kitchen bin so we don't have to keep changing this plastic bag.
Not really a trash bin per se, but we also have this big shoebox beside the door to hold all our recyclables - we gather things that can be recycled here and then bring it down to the recycling bin whenever it gets a little too full.
Not the most sustainable of solutions because it's a cardboard shoe box, but it does blend it quite well on this shelf because it's where our socks are also kept :)
