Meet the area of our home that had the least amount of renovation – the service yard.
The only thing that we changed here was the flooring because we didn’t see a need to jazz it up that much, and honestly? No regrets.
After doing laundry, the clean clothes just sit on top of the washing machine while I hang them to dry. So there was no need for an additional board or rack on top of the washing machine – having one would mean an additional area to clean as well.
So technically you can say that the top of the washing machine may be one of the cleanest spots in the house đź¤
Our trusty IKEA rack is the ultimate organisation and space-saving solution for this area.
The laundry necessities go on top – detergent, softener, fabric sprays, colour catching sheets and clothes pegs – so that we have easy access. The hangers go in the middle rack and laundry bags at the bottom.
My OCD is very happy that it sits nicely in the space beside our washing machine and behind our service yard door, away from plain sight.
The laundry chart here is both practical and it also spruces up the area. I’ve been meaning to hang it up but here we are – one year of procrastination later.
On the other side, you’ll find our laundry basket (that we honestly need to upsize) and robot vacuum.
We activate our robot vacuum – aka Moppy – every 3-4 days depending on how dirty the house feels (e.g. whether we had guests over or did heavier cooking).
There was the option to install it with the water inlet and outlet so that it can self clean completely, refill the clean water tank and empty the dirty water. But we opted out of it in case we want to move it to another spot in the house.
This means that we have to manually fill up the clean water tank and empty the dirty water every cycle, but it’s a very minor inconvenience to us.
We also chose to level the flooring from our service yard to the kitchen so that it’s easier for our robot vacuum to maneuver around.
If you’re still on the fence about getting a Steigen, it’s a hell yes for us.
It works great especially if you are working with compact spaces like ours and the heating function comes in handy during the rainy seasons.
But unlike what some people may recommend, we don’t close up our service yard completely to trap the heat because we find that it leaves a musky smell on the clothing.
Our Steigen also doubles up as the light and fan when we are doing laundry.
Also, if you noticed, we didn’t really make use of the vertical space in our service yard because the thought of our clean clothes brushing against anything just turns me off – just some food for thought if you are OCD like me.
