Our home layout opens straight into the living room. We thought our feng shui master might ask us to build a partition wall, but instead, he only advised us to keep the first window at the corner covered with curtains most of the time. Since the living room is where we spend most of our time, it had to be cozy yet functional. We designed a full-height cabinet that combines shoe storage, altar, display, and extra storage — all in one line. The corner is rounded (no sharp edges facing the main door + safer for kids in future).

✨ Shoe Cabinet • Feng shui says shoe storage shouldn’t go above shoulder height, and I also didn’t want smells traveling upwards. So the cabinet is split into two: shoes below, organized drawers above. • Many people like an open shelf for keys or display, but since we use a digital lock (no keys!) and I didn’t want dust, I skipped it. • My husband jokes the drawers look like a pharmacist’s cabinet — super OCD-friendly! 😂

Here’s a peek at my shoe cabinet’s internal layout vs. my planning drawing — not exactly the same, but close enough haha 🤍

✨ Display Cabinet • My husband insisted on space for his Bearbricks + Marvel figures. • I kept one middle shelf for myself — displaying JJ Lin’s black album, JFJ member gifts, and Zhang Yuan fan items. • Added U-shaped LED lighting, purely for aesthetics (we rarely turn it on).

✨ Altar & Storage Cabinet • A simple altar connects seamlessly to a side storage cabinet. • Inside, I used Muji drawers to pre-plan and organize everything. I literally mapped out the contents during the reno stage — it was stressful, but worth it!

✨ Ceiling • Initially, we wanted an L-box with cove light, but feng shui ruled it out (“no hat” above the altar). So we went with a full false ceiling instead. • Downside: I can’t run the ceiling fan too strong, or the vibration makes the ceiling frame rattle. We had it checked — nothing wrong structurally, just my own worry, so now I keep the fan gentle. ✨ Door Wrapping • The original HDB fire-rated door was in great condition, so we just rewrapped it to fit our theme. • Found Guber Reno Work on Carousell (a husband-wife team, very detailed!). • Wrapping: SGD 268

We chose high-heat memory fold for a crisp look. • Day & Night Curtains: RM1818 ≈ SGD 560 👉 Question time: In your living room, do you prefer more display space or more hidden storage?
