Our Kitchen: How We Maximized Space

Moving on to our kitchen! We opted to keep an open kitchen concept, as we don't do heavy cooking (eg deep frying, etc) to keep the house open. Our kitchen and dining area is in two areas, separated by our fridge placement - allowing for a clear distinction between cooking and serving areas. Our primary cooking area has something unique - two separate hobs, one gas and one induction! It was a practical decision because my husband prefers gas while I prefer induction, so we were able to get both at a good price. Hint: it's actually cheaper than getting a built-in combined gas/induction hob! And you still get to retain extra countertop space in between. The placement of our fridge is intentional - while most people would place it beside the wall (where our bomb shelter is), that actually restricts you into getting a single door fridge because you wouldn't be able to open the fridge all the way. We also preferred this layout as it's ideal to have your fridge, sink, and stove in a triangular layout for easy access to any of the three while cooking. It also ended up being a natural separator between our kitchen and service yard! We chose to do a built-in dry pantry area where we would store things for when we were hosting guests -- things like our water dispenser, glasses, plates/bowls and utensils. Placing them here made it easier to serve guests and conveniently next to the dining area. One thing we knew we wanted from the start was to have sintered stone for our kitchen countertops. This single profile sintered stone is from Aurastone under the code 'Frassino Oak' which looks like wood! We found it to complement our home aesthetic perfectly. We placed our fridge opposite our sink for easy access, and to also serve as a subtle divider to our service yard. We chose to get a white fridge to match our home aesthetic, and 6 doors because of its convenient separation for foods! This is what our kitchen looked like pre-renovation so we were amazed to see how this space was transformed once the carpentry was in! No regrets hacking the service yard door because it made our kitchen so much more spacious.
