Hey everyone! Welcome to our little corner of The Little Starry Loft. đź’«
When we first started planning our kitchen, one of the biggest decisions we had to make was the countertop. It may sound like a small detail, but once you live in your home, you’ll realize just how much time is spent around this one surface. From chopping veggies and kneading dough to dropping off groceries or simply making a quick cup of coffee, the countertop quietly becomes the stage for so many everyday moments.
As new homeowners, it’s easy to get caught up in colors and styles, but what really matters is how your countertop supports the way you live. Here are a few pointers we found helpful when making our decision:
1. Think about how often you cook
If you’re in the kitchen almost every day, durability and low maintenance are key. We’ve been in our home for over a year, and Dekton has truly impressed us. It’s super durable, resistant to scratches, stains, and heat — basically built for everyday kitchen life. If you cook only occasionally, cheaper options like laminate or solid surface could work, but for those who spend most of their time in the kitchen, investing in a material like Dekton is worth every penny.
2. Consider the mess factor
Love baking? Or are you someone who experiments with sauces and spices? If yes, stain resistance will be your best friend. A non-porous surface will give you peace of mind when accidents (inevitably) happen.
3. Match it with your kitchen’s size and vibe
Lighter tones can brighten and visually expand a smaller kitchen, while darker shades create a sleek, modern feel and do a better job of disguising stains from everyday use.
4. Plan for your layout flow
If you need long stretches for rolling dough, chopping, or prepping, talk to your contractor about seam placement. A thoughtful layout makes all the difference in creating a smooth, uninterrupted workspace.
5. Don’t overlook comfort
Countertop height and depth may seem like small details, but they really impact how comfortable it feels to cook, chop, or even just lean against the counter. Adjustments can be made depending on whether you’re taller, shorter, or simply want a different ergonomic feel.
And here’s something we’re really glad we included: aside from the main countertop, we also built a high table. It has become one of the most flexible spots in our home — giving us extra space for baking, prepping ingredients, or even working on a laptop. It doubles as a practical workspace and a casual gathering point, and honestly, it’s one of those underrated additions that makes daily life flow so much smoother.
At the end of the day, choosing a countertop isn’t just about what looks good in photos. It’s about how it serves your everyday routines and how it makes you feel in your kitchen.
A space that’s thoughtfully designed not only supports your cooking but also becomes a part of the little rituals that make a house feel like home.
So if you’re in the middle of planning, take your time to imagine how you’ll use your kitchen day to day — and let that guide your choice. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later. 🌿✨
