This regret comes from choosing a fan that looks good but doesn’t circulate air well. Hubs is very particular about the fan. He worried the blades might ‘chop’ the light from our recessed lights and create those annoying flickering shadows at the sides (aka fan strobing effect), so we were extra careful about placement and kept checking with our ID. We even sacrificed a 52-inch fan for a 46-inch model and installed dimmable recessed lights just in case. The main reason we chose this fan was because it has one of the shortest body heights compared to other models. FYI, once the fan is installed, switching to a larger fan would have cost extra.
The standard placement would have been right in the middle of the four recessed lights for a balanced look. However, when we switched it on, we barely felt any airflow even at maximum speed. We were honestly quite shocked. The air was mostly blowing straight down to the floor in the middle and we had to stand directly under the fan at top speed just to feel the wind. We are not entirely sure if this was due to the fan having only 3 blades but the circulation was definitely weaker than expected. The only reason we decided to get this fan is because it has a shortest body compared to others. If strong air circulation is important to you, this is something to think through very carefully before committing to a slimmer or smaller fan model.
In the end, we decided to shift the fan more towards to where we are seated, additional cost incurred. This meant cutting the false ceiling again and pulling over the wiring, which was a bit of a headache because we would need to patch up the false ceiling again. Now, the fan sits closer to the edge of the room. It is not perfectly centred, but functionality won over aesthetics and we are so so glad we made the last min change.
This really reminded us why it is so important to be present during the reno. Being there meant we could immediately spot what wasn’t working for us and make changes on the spot, saving ourselves from bigger headache later 👍
It is really tempting to choose a fan just because it looks good. We did the same. But after experiencing it firsthand, we realised very quickly that airflow and practicality matter much more in the long run. At that moment, it felt like a huge regret. A fan that looks nice but does not cool the space properly easily becomes a daily frustration, especially since cooling is the main reason for buying a fan in the first place. Slightly compromising on symmetry or aesthetics would have been worth it if it meant better comfort and airflow for everyday living.
Anyway, if we could turn back time, we would definitely go for a 52-inch fan for the living room. Oh well, at least we managed to shift it and downgrade this to a half-reno-regret! HAHAHA
