My Husband's Weird Pre-Reno Hack
4974
You know that feeling when your husband comes up with an idea so random you question everything? Meet Francis and his latest brilliant plan: a staycation in our completely empty, unrenovated resale HDB flat. Just look at how prepared he is🫠 It began with this text, to which I found it super weird. But no choice, I would like to think that I'm an extremely supportive wife. The two highlights of what Francis packed for his stay over: 1. Extension cord – in a completely empty house. I don't understand what he planned to plug in since he has all the electrical points in the house to charge his phone/laptop. 2. Bathroom floor mat – and okay, I'll admit this was actually genius. Stepping out of the shower onto cold, wet tiles? Not ideal. Here's where Francis's stay over paid off big time. We were planning to install a shower screen to protect our carpentry, but there was this tricky window situation between the sink and shower area. During his "staycation", Francis discovered a major flaw in our original plan. If we placed the shower screen at the start of the window (as shown), we would constantly be bumping our elbows into the screen while brushing teeth. Ouch. But placing it at the end of the window created another problem of a cramped shower space that would have us knocking into walls and the screen itself (also that's my attempt at drawing our van gogh sink, but i obviously did no justice to it LOL) The stay over also allowed us to uncover several other issues: Track Lights = Kitchen Sauna: We planned to keep the existing track lights to save money. However, we realised that they caused the kitchen to become hot very fast. Imagine cooking dinner on a hot Singapore day with those blazing overhead? Wah sure melt one. Flickering Shadows: Our existing ceiling fans with built-in lights created annoying flickering shadows that we didn’t like. This made us reconsider getting fans with built in lights and be more stringent in our research. Noisy Aircon: We initially wanted to keep the existing aircons to reduce our spendings, but after one night, Francis discovered they develop this persistent ringing sound after running for a while. We asked around and realised that repair costs were not far off from replacement costs, so we made the choice to replace them! Imagine only replacing them after we have moved in, I think I’ll cry at the amount of dust and the whole disruption. I have to admit that: sometimes the weirdest husband logic turns out to be the smartest approach. Would you consider doing something like this before your reno?
