The vanity area was one of the more debated parts of our home design. We wanted it in the master bedroom and close to the master toilet so it’s easy to access skincare, do makeup, and get ready before heading out.

Initially, we considered an extended vanity table that would run parallel to the bed. But with the wardrobe already in the room, we felt it might make the space feel too tight. In the end, we kept it compact to maintain a more open feel in the master bedroom. This current location that's near the window but not too near also lets natural light in without being too glaring which I've found is really helpful when doing my makeup.

Our final setup is a 60cm-wide vanity with a rounded corner to reduce knocks in a tighter space. It has a 15cm-height drawer, for keeping accessories that aren’t used daily.

To maximise storage and keep the tabletop clear, our contractor built two niches with power sockets, and we sized the niche dimension to fit my largest item which is a slightly bulky hair dryer. We also factored in some allowance if I want to place my curler too. We chose sockets with USB ports so I could conveniently charge my phone and smartwatch in addition to using hair tools.

Above the table, we installed a 100cm-tall storage mirror with five shelf levels. We left a 20cm gap between the vanity and the mirror storage — enough space for other easily accessible items without making the surface feel cluttered. I mostly use the shelves for everyday skincare and makeup, and still have one shelf free. The vanity is mainly for my things, my husband keeps his portable watch case in the wardrobe instead, so we’ve kept the vanity more focused on daily prepping items and beauty storage.

To keep the space feeling light, we paired the vanity with a boucle chair that has transparent acrylic back and legs. It’s visually light but still comfy to sit on, and doesn’t take up visual space in the room.

One of our favourite details is the fluted panel. We got our panels from Vwalla in a brown-cream tone that’s formaldehyde-free. Since we only needed four panels and the installation quote was quite pricey, we decided to DIY it. We used Maxbond to fix them onto the wall ourselves, it's a nice addition that keeps the vanity minimalist but not empty 😊 Tip: Before carpentry was fabricated, we measured the total width of the fluted panels when clipped together so that the vanity width would align without gaps or overhang. We then shared the final fluted panel measurements with the contractor. Key measurement tips if you're looking to design a minimalist and functional vanity, or are self designing as well: - Vanity width: 60cm for compact size but with enough surface area for daily essentials. - Drawer height: 15cm for flatter items like pouches, extra accessories, or cotton pads. - Storage mirror height: at least 100cm to provide ample vertical shelving without feeling oversized. - Vertical space between vanity and mirror: 20cm which is enough to place items below the hung mirror but doesn't look like the gap is too wide and awkward - Niche size: custom-fit by measuring your largest essential (like a hair dryer) and size your niche to fit with a bit of wiggle room.
