  • Making the Switch (Literally) in our Tiny Kitchen!
Welcome back to @ourcarousellhome! For those who are new here, here’s a preview at our tiny kitchen. As mentioned in previous posts, our estate doesn’t come with a service yard, so this is all the kitchen space we’ve got. We made the most of it by designing a U-shaped galley kitchen that’s both functional and minimal. From the photo, you’ll see that the right side is our only usable countertop. It’s currently home to the rice cooker, microwave, and our trusty airfryer - which we used to keep in the cabinet, but eventually gave up and left it out for convenience.

When we first renovated, we had two switches installed beside the hob - one for the hob, one for the hood. But surprise surprise, our Mayer gas stove runs on batteries, which meant one switch ended up doing... absolutely nothing. For two whole years. Then came the lightbulb moment: why not convert that unused switch into a proper power socket? That way, we could move the airfryer next to the stove, where there’s better ventilation (since we can turn on the ventilation hood) and free up precious counter space. It made perfect sense in theory, but we needed to check with an electrician to see if it was actually doable.

We first reached out to our ID, since we had a great working relationship and he’d always been helpful - even after our renovation. But to our slight disappointment, he ghosted us after saying he’d check with his electrician. Understandable though - it’s been 2 years 😅 Thankfully, a friend-turned-returning-ID came to the rescue and linked us up with an electrician who confirmed it was totally doable. After months of procrastinating (and 2 years after moving in), we finally made the switch - literally. My friend managed to slot us in on a Monday morning while both hubs and I were working from home. The electrician came by, and in under 20 minutes, the unused switch was professionally converted into a power socket. And just like that, we now have a brand new, 100% more useful socket!

We moved our spices to the other corner, and our cooking station is just as efficient as before - if not even better! It’s a great reminder that you never know unless you ask. I’m so glad we finally went ahead with this after two years. Small improvements like this really do make everyday life so much easier. If there is anything that you’ve been wanting to change, maybe this is your sign to act on it! :’) Stay tuned for more tips and little wins as we continue uncovering joys (and lessons!) in our home journey 🏡✨
