We shared in an earlier video on the kitchen triangle, which was what we had in mind when we designed our kitchen! Later on, we came across this idea of “kitchen zones”, which divides the kitchen into activity zones.
We found this approach more relevant for smaller Singapore kitchens and also for homes like ours where two people often cook together!
There a total of 6 zones and these include the
1. Prep Zone: this is where the rinsing, peeling, chopping and getting ingredients ready to cook take place
2. Cooking Zone: Once the ingredients are ready, everything moves here for stir-frying, steaming, baking or whatever creative cooking adventure you are attempting.
3. Cleaning Zone: this is probably the least enjoyable part of the kitchen for us but a well-designed cleaning zone can make it feel a little less painful
4. Storage Zone: This zone keeps your kitchen organised and efficient. The goal is to place items where they are most useful so you can grab what you need without searching everywhere.
5. Hosting Zone: We are introverted turtles so this one is not for us, but if you love hosting friends or family, this is where your kitchen becomes social. Some of our friends chose a full island, while others preferred a small counter extension or a bar top for people to gather around.
6. Laundry Zone: If your service yard sits inside the kitchen, this area handles your laundry needs and can also store larger cleaning items like vacuums and mops.
We have a kitchen guide where we wrote down in detail on our needs for each zone and how they work for us. drop us a dm on instagram if you would like the link to it :-)
