After our not-so-fun adventures with a praying mantis, giant flying cockroach and a bat (yes, you read that right 🥲), we finally gave in and installed an insect mesh for our service yard last month.
Initially, J was very tempted to train ourselves to embrace the kampung life, to learn to not be so scared of these friends. The adventurous encounters seem to always happen after the sun sets, so whenever the sky turned dark, we would run to close the service yard windows. On days when we do laundry at night, we also found ourselves struggling to choose between ventilation or potential unwelcome visitors. After a year of enduring this anxiety, we decided that it’s not worth our mental energy and finally gave in.
However, we were met with obstacles during our search for the right kind of insect mesh for us. We were hesitant to commit to the options provided to us because all of them required us to compromise an aspect of our living experience. Until A1 Screen presented us with a solution that fits our lifestyle! ✨
We’re here to share our experience as we struggled to find any information that addressed our pain points.
The solutions we saw/were given before we met A1:
1) Magnetic mesh on top of window grilles (= can’t hang items on grilles, which we frequently do)
2) Sliding mesh without window grilles (we’re not keen to remove our grilles for future childproofing purposes)
3) Sliding mesh on top of grilles (= bulky frames that will eat into usable service yard space)
So we hope this post helps anyone who may be in similar shoes as us! Feel free to ask us any questions regarding this topic 🥰
Upon understanding our needs (we use the grilles) for a variety of purposes, but we don't use the outdoor laundry rack provided by HDB at all), the staff from A1 presented us with an option that blew our minds.
As we do not need to access the laundry rack outside, they can install the mesh outside of our windows instead. We were sold after we finally found a solution that addresses all our pain points :,)
The final verdict:
Magnetic insect mesh mounted on an aluminium frame to be installed outside our windows, wide enough to cover 2/3 of our window panels. A brush strip meant to come into contact with the 3rd window panel will be installed to ensure that all entry points are sealed. The staff was the one who proposed a mesh that covers 2/3 instead of 3/3 of our windows in order to help us save some costs :,)
We were truly impressed with how he went above and beyond to patiently understand our lifestyle needs before proposing a solution that works in our favour.
Installation was quick & fuss free.
They even checked with us if we wanted to seal up the exposed rainwater drainage holes on the window frames as insects can still enter from them. We decided to seal them up since rainwater can still be drained from the other non-exposed holes. P.S. We had no idea these holes were meant to drain rainwater! 🫢
