All our bedroom space planning ideas - in one post!
Here’s some of the requirements we had when we were planning for our master bedroom:
1. King sized bed is a must! I love the idea of being able to roll away from my husband angrily after a fight 🙂
2. Bed must be accessible from both sides - this means no pushing the bed against the wall, which makes it difficult for one party to get out of bed when the other party is still asleep
3. Nobody sleeps facing the toilet door - for Fengshui reasons, smell reasons 🤢 and also it’s just not too pleasant to wake up and see a toilet bowl LOL
We have a recessed wall in our master bedroom that is not only too narrow for shelves but also off centre 😭 paid good money to flush the wall so it’s completely flat and easier for furniture placement
the downside of this is that one part of the wall is partition board (though it can’t be seen visually) so we can’t mount heavy things (e.g cupboards, TVs etc) there.
We also retained the existing light and fan from the previous owner to save costs!
This is the original layout the previous owners had - honestly, we found it clunky and difficult to move around in. They had to fit their tv console into the recessed wall, which is why it wasn’t aligned to the bed AND also why we decided to flush the wall so we wouldn’t have this problem in future.
They also had a built in wardrobe that somehow ended halfway in the middle of the wall so there was a strange gap between the wardrobe and the toilet door.
So we decided to hack the wardrobe (even though it was still standing well) to free up more space and flexibility for our new layout.
This is the standard layout that most IDs proposed - your usual bed in the middle, with an L-shaped built in wardrobe to maximise space. The wardrobe would also have a cut out nook beside the bed to serve as the bedside table. You have probably seen this layout 1637141 times - and we’re gotta say it’s the most practical of all the bedroom layouts we’ve seen :)
But we weren’t too keen on getting built ins for our bedroom and we were also not sure if we wanted an L shaped wardrobe because of the awkward space at the corner :(
Interestingly, we also met a super imaginative ID who gave us this most… extravagant idea for our layout! He proposed having the bed in a corner by the window and the wardrobe beside it to sort of “frame up the space”.
The wardrobe was also going to be a two way one, which means it could be opened from both the bed side and the walkway side! That sounded very innovative but also… not too necessary cos we don’t envision ourselves standing on the bed to get our clothes 🤣
On top of that, he also proposed we concealed our toilet door with hidden panels for fengshui and aesthetic purposes and add a secret built in vanity at the end of the wall.
As you can tell, we didn’t go with this idea at all because it sounded rather inconvenient (we wanted to walk to our bed, not crawl in from the bottom) and also would cost a bomb 🤣 it was fun listening to him talk though oops
This is our current layout - and what we arrived at after doing lots of painful measurement to make sure we had space for everything.
We have the king sized bed in the middle and just a single row of wardrobe beside the toilet. It’s not as much storage space as having an L shaped wardrobe for sure, but we made up for the loss in storage space with a storage bed!
Duck’s side of the bed also has a rack (more storage and higher than the usual bedside table) instead of a side table so she can use that from the wardrobe side as a vanity shelf/table too.
And this is what our bedroom looks like! Definitely not as sleek and well-put together compared to the options with built in carpentry, but we appreciate the flexibility to swap out and move around stuff as we get used to living here.
We’re also looking at making more improvements to the room - a scented diffuser somewhere perhaps? And we’ve also left the wall behind our bed frame empty so we can add shelves for artwork/knick knacks, or even a projector in future !
