DINKWAD life in our cozy 4-room BTO
How we planned in-built & off-the-rack displays for knick knacks 🧸

Hello and welcome back to another post in thepresent.home! Here we’re taking a different direction - instead of covering a specific room, we’ll be showing you the spaces around our home that are designed to display our various bits and bobs, adding character to the house and making it uniquely ours! With a mix of built-ins and off-the-shelf setups, we have plenty of space to showcase our items while having enough flexibility to shift things around if we need to. Built-in 1: Curved shelving by the dining area! These curves were suggested and designed by our ID to make full use of the dead space next to our fridge. We love it because the curves soften our home interior, and it also adds an accent and point of interest to our dining area. We use these shelves to display space items that have proven to be conversation starters - including food related popmart figurines, our terrarium from a workshop at Soilboy, and a lamp. Built-in 2: Our entryway shelf! This is not just a display area but also functions as a separation between our entrance and the rest of the house, adding a bit more privacy since we directly face the corridor and our opposite neighbour. It’s the perfect way to welcome guests into our home, as they’re greeted with a curation of items we’ve collected from artists, from trips or just our current obsessions. Some of these include our buys from Tokyo Disneyland, wood figures from New Zealand and a playful balloon dog figurine. Built-in 3: Our coffee corner open shelves! These are super functional as we use the shelves to store our coffee beans and equipment, but also add character to our home as we display other personal items like our analogue flip down clock, Bible verses and a bear figurine we painted together. These all add a nice and soothing touch to our dining space! Built-in 4: Master Bedroom vanity The built-in counter on top of our platform bed is not only functional for our daily morning routines, but also perfect as another display space! Because of its wider footprint this also allows us to display larger items - like our wedding mirror, our Lego pieces and even some flowers. Off-the-rack: Taobao bookshelf in the study I think we’ve all seen a variation of this Taobao bookshelf somewhere online - for us this was practically for our collection of books, but it was also an opportunity to add some playfulness to our study! If you look closely, you can find a few more Farmer Bob figurines, and more collections from our overseas travels. Overall, we love the mix of built-ins and off-the-rack displays around the house, and we encourage you to also think about how much or how little open display spaces you need - because along with the beauty of it comes the cleaning oops. Hahaha good luck and see you in the next one!
