"Huh? Your living room no aircon?"
Yup - that's the situation at our house. We only have aircons in the three bedrooms, and none in the living/dining/kitchen areas. The main reason for this is pretty simple actually - not because we wanted to simulate life in a desert, but because we bought this resale flat with three almost-brand-new aircons in the bedrooms and didn't replace them.
Adding additional aircons during renovation would require quite extensive removal/readjustment/rebuilding of the current aircon trunking and review of the whole System 3 thing, hence we decided to just go with whatever was there.
So the main question is... NOT HOT MEH?!
To be honest, the answer is... not really.
It does get warm and a little humid in the afternoons (we all know SG weather right hahaha) but we also evaluated our lifestyles and realised we don't spend much time in the living room in the day.
We WFH/game/workout in a separate study room and we have a pretty breezy dining area (thanks to no service yard windows) and those are where we tend to spend our time in the mornings/afternoons.
We usually only spend time in the living room in the evenings/nights where the weather is cooler + our trusty ceiling fan has managed to serve us quite well so far! It has speeds from 1-6 but speed 4 is usually more than enough.
We've also kept our living area as open and free of clutter as possible to facilitate cross breeze and ventilation - as you can tell, we don't have a big coffee table or any other big furniture except a basic TV console, sofa and side table.
We avoid having items like books or clothes (laundry on the sofa must be cleared!!) lying around to avoid them trapping heat and dust.
(This is also a great way to keep the house looking good regardless of the temperature hahaha)
And well... here's where our ID had planned for the aircon to be if we had decided to get one. It was either above the TV or above the sofa, but we weren't too keen on having the wind blow directly on us. We were also a little concerned about aircon leaks/condensation/moisture issues that would affect the TV and other electronics at the console area, so i guess this is now one problem we do not have :)
But one problem we DO have is that we also (in the rare moments where we have guests over) want our guests to feel comfortable, which is why we eventually also caved in and bought an extra Dyson fan to help keep things cool around here.
(We used our climate vouchers for this!)
The air purifying features are a good bonus, but we also like the flexibility of being able to move this fan around so it blows directly at whichever guest needs the most cooling down :P
It's also not too heavy, so even Duck can move it around with ease!
So yes - this is life in the living room with no aircon.
It's definitely doable - but that said, it's also very much dependent on your lifestyle. Duck grew up without aircon (at all!) so having aircon is not always a must for her (and Frog is a man so he can uh.... wear less clothes and not be arrested by the police).
BUT if you entertain often or have kids/pets/elderly who might spend most of their time in the living area, then maybe an aircon would be a good idea for you :)
