We took a slightly different approach with our master bedroom toilet, stepping away from the creamy, neutral palette used throughout the rest of our home. Since we were retiling the entire space, we wanted to try something that felt more playful and visually interesting, while still maintaining a sense of cohesion.

We’ve always loved terrazzo as it brings a lot of personality and texture but incorporating it into the main living areas felt too bold compared to the rest of the house. The master toilet felt like the right space to experiment. It doesn’t receive much natural light due to the NS-facing layout, so we aimed for a design that would brighten and open up the space.

To balance the playful nature of terrazzo and ensure the space would remain timeless, we combined three different tiles.

    - Beige floor tiles: These keep the base of the room warm and neutral, helping to visually open up the floor area. - Terrazzo on the bottom half of the walls: Adds a fun, textured element without overwhelming the space. - White glazed subway tiles on the top half: These reflect light, giving the room a brighter feel. Although they’re known to be harder to maintain, we haven’t had any issues so far since this part of the wall stays relatively dry. After showering, we use a squeegee for a few quick swipes around the shower area to prevent water stains.

We also chose rose gold fixtures, which complements the terracotta tones within the terrazzo tiles, tying all the furnishings together while still allowing the terrazo to be the main feature.

For the shower, we installed a half-height wall with a curved glass design. This keeps the space open and airy while still containing water effectively. We opted not to include a door for ease of cleaning and to maintain a more seamless look.

We kept the ventilation fan from the previous owner and added a bit of character to it with a macramé daisy flower pull cord for the fan flaps. The macrame is made by my mum and it's a cute decor that makes the space feel more personal.

Design tips for choosing tiles and fixtures that feel cohesive: - Start with your boldest material, like terrazzo, and design around it. Use its colours and tones as a guide for your other tile and fixture choices. - Match fixtures to accent tones within your tiles. Our rose gold fixtures bring out the warm specks in the terrazzo and help tie everything together visually. - Use tile placement as your design feature. We used terrazzo only on the bottom half of the wall to add visual interest without overwhelming the room. ***Most importantly, take back as many tile samples as you can to mix and match. We also used a designing tool to render how the tiles and furnishings would look like in the actual space.
