Hi everyone! In this post, we’ll talk about all the reno decisions and furniture placements in our home that’s influenced by Feng Shui 💨⛲️
While we initially felt that feng shui is more of a superstition, we now see the value in those advices that we have chosen to adopt. Many of the decisions make sense once we live in the space. Let’s dive right in!
1. Installing a panel at the entryway
-As our main door directly faces the living room windows, the Qi that enters our home will escape. The advice given was to trap the Qi by building a panel at the entryway.
-Now that we have experienced living with the panel, we would do it again, feng shui or not, because it provides us with added privacy by making sure that passersby are not able to see through our entire living room.
2. No mirrors should be installed at positions where it reflects the main door
-We initially wanted to install a full height and width mirror on the left wall in this picture (adjacent to our peninsula) for fit checks and to see ourselves whenever we feel like dancing (p.s. we’re both dancers :))
-However, it is not advisable to install mirrors at positions where it reflects the main door, as it will also reflect the Qi out of the house
-In the end, we decided to install a hidden mirror instead (see next photo), which has worked out well for us!
3. Sofa placement should be in the command position
-Originally, the previous owners had their sofa placed on the opposite side of the living room.
-However, we were advised to place our sofa here instead to ensure that we have a good view of the main door, so that we will be able to see who is at the door as soon as there’s any movements.
-Psychologically, this also makes us feel in control of our home, subconsciously making us feel safer.
P.S. In Feng Shui, the command position is a placement strategy that emphasizes a sense of control and security. It involves positioning your furniture such that you can see the door without being directly in line with it, ideally with a solid structure behind you. This placement allows you to be aware of your surroundings and feel more at ease
4. Work desk to be placed in the command position
-Following the same principle from above, we were advised to place M’s work desk in this position. This desk placement has raised many questions when guests come over as it is more common for desks to be flushed against the wall.
-However, when desks are flushed against the wall, the user’s back (& screen) will be exposed, which may constantly invoke a feeling of being watched.
-Though this is our home and we technically don’t have to worry about peering eyes, this desk placement subconsciously makes the user feel more safe and relaxed as he’s able to monitor the activities outside and at the room door.
-Not facing the wall while doing work has also made being at the desk less uninspiring.
I always share these 2 examples whenever I talk about the desk placement:
1. In a restaurant/cafe, most people will gear towards corner seats or seats where their backs are not exposed to constant movements because it psychologically feels safer and therefore more comfortable.
2. When you look at bosses’ offices, their desks are usually placed such that they can be seated with their backs against the wall, with their screens only visible from their POV and not anyone else who enters the room.
The 2 examples highlight how being in the command position can evoke a sense of security and control đź¤
5. Wardrobe should be placed parallel to our bed
-Initially, we wanted an L-shaped wardrobe with an open niche that acts as a bedside table. However, we were advised against having anything that juts towards the bed, signifying something that is pointing at us when we are sleeping.
-Instead, we were advised to ensure that anything that we place in our bedrooms should be parallel to our bed.
-However, we were worried that there would not be enough space to store all our clothes and bed linens if we only have one row of wardrobe against the wall. Hence, we came up with the idea of building this walk-in wardrobe that checks off both the feng shui and storage space requirements.
Do check out our walk-in wardrobe post for more details on this!
6. No ceiling fans in bedrooms
-It is not advisable to install ceiling fans in bedrooms as it is believed that the “chopping” movements of the fan will disrupt the Qi and sleep of the people sleeping underneath it.
-Psychologically, it also causes an unsettling energy, knowing that something is hanging and spinning above you.
-Our living room is the only part of our home that has a ceiling fan. All our bedrooms have a corner fan like the one in this photo :)
And that’s all for this post! Even if you don’t believe in feng shui, we hope it was a fun read for you! đź¤âś¨
