  • House Tour: Inside an Airy 1668sqft Corner Unit Executive Maisonette
Hello! Welcome to SZ The Maison, a 1668sqft executive maisonette. This is our 2nd abode after moving out of our matrimonial 5-room BTO. Whilst our 1st was a matrimonial home, having grew the family with 2 kids, we figured a bigger space and building a family home was needed. We also made the decision to move partly to be back at our childhood neighbourhood, and closer to family. Let’s start at the entryway, the first thing you see as you step through our unit! Our initial plan was to flush the entire flooring throughout the unit. However, this would increase the height at our doorway and our main door/gate would be unusually short. So we decided for the entryway to remain at its original height and created a tiled ramp into the house, for ease of pushing the stroller into the house if needed. We also segregated the space by using a printed tile, something we shied away from in our previous home. This brown-toned terrazzo tiles are equal parts fun and neutral!

As we’re the corner unit, our floorplan is inclusive of the access balcony, as it was purchased by the previous owner. We love the extra space! Since this entryway was a bonus, we ensured there’s ample storage so that everything can have its own space. Shoe cabinets for less commonly used pairs, shoe niche for everyday pairs, lower cabinets for kids’ daily school necessities and upper cabinets for all the stuff we grab before we leave the house.

I envisioned this niche to be aesthetic, always decked with any kind of home scent, yet still practical as a catch-all area between going in and out of the house.

This settee stores the kids’ shoes! We curved the corner not only because it provides a better flow as we walk into the house, but also to prevent any head accidents since my intrusive thought as a mum knows no bounds 😂

From the original floorplan, we merged the study/bedroom and the kitchen to create one large kitchen. I love an open concept kitchen, so a standalone kitchen island is a must! We also curved the corners of the island because why? Intrusive thoughts. 😆 A special feature in our home: as EMs usually does not have a large storeroom, we created a small storeroom on the left. I envision that it will serve both as a storage and a pantry, however it is not ready at this point in time, will share more when we get there!

At the end of the galley of the kitchen, is the WC and tall unit. These are just before the double height balcony which will be our future dining area. We also built a sliding door with fixed window panels all the way up the double height balcony, which created a narrow outdoor space and keeps the rubbish chute outdoors too! In case of any pests hehe.

On the right, you can find our small little laundry area right beside our tall unit. The counter space can be used to do ironing. We also added a open shelving for display of all the laundry needs - pods, scent beads, dryer sheets! I’d like to label the containers in time to come. This is also where we installed the Wells water dispenser, with its filtration system along with our bottles and tumblers, stored in the cabinet beneath it.

Our living area is right beside the balcony/dining space, which we kept open as well. As you can tell at this point, we love a large and open, airy space!

From the living room, is the view of the rest of the level 1. We created a study/play space for the kids under the stairs, where the original store used to be. Need to put in lots more work to make the area cosier though! And yes, I’m that millennial mum raising living room kids, so I am ok with incorporating play space in common areas of the house. As long as they’re kept neat! Further up, you’ll be able to see an empty space which we named the multi-purpose room - it’s a guest room, a prayer room, a craft room, whathaveyous. We’ll eventually install a diagonal sliding door but until our budget permits, it’s an open space as well. 🫣

Level 2 is still a major work in progress in all rooms, so the corridor’s all I’ve got to share this time!

A sneak into the playroom through the little arch hole in the wall, left by the previous owner. Thanks for coming with us in our recently moved-in house tour! Until the next post, and hopefully a little more furnishings and improvements for us to share too!
