We’ve been living in our place for almost 6 months now and there are a few purchases we have been loving that we would also like to recommend to new home owners!
First up would be our extendable sintered stone dining table. We were able to customise the table top and the legs. On normal days, the table is at 1.4m, which is still quite a big size for 2 pax. This gives us lots of space in the dining room. But when we host, it can go up to 2m, which we can comfortably sit 8-10pax!
We were deciding between a wooden table or a sintered stone table, but always find that wood would be high maintenance. Took awhile for us to find a table that we fancied that checked all the boxes. Went to so many shops and glad that didn’t give up and settled for other tables.
Tip to new home owners, take your time to browse! You’ll eventually be able to find one that meets your criteria.
We didn’t cater for a specific area in our service yard for a robo vacuum, so we have our Dreame Robo placed in our study. Saves us the hassle of vacuuming and mopping weekly. A reminder to also clean and wash the vacuum parts occasionally so your home remains clean + maintains the vacuum. If you don’t wish to splurge on this, we would also suggest to get a mid-range model. We have heard stories of friends with cheaper models which aren’t as smart eg when it comes to obstacle detection.
We spent about $900 on this which we bought on sale, which we feel is rather reasonable for the convenience it has brought us.
Now for the No.1 item we highly highly recommend - insect meshes. So far, we have not seen big insects in our home after installing these. I recall one day when we heard a loud buzzing sound while we were in the living room, a wasp had flew towards our house but it got stuck in between our mesh and window ledge. Managed to chase it away by spraying some insect repellent at it. Can’t imagine the horror if it actually made it into our home! 😦
We got the retractable ones from Oneko and as you can see, it pretty much doesn’t affect our view. We paid slightly less than $1.8k for our service yard, living room and 3 bedrooms.
The ones in the bathroom are DIY-ed with magnetic openings as the vendor also shared that it was not as worth it to have them install retractable ones in the bathroom, so we got the DIY kit from Oneko and did it ourselves.
Some points to take note of for the meshes:
1. Wind into the home will be affected slightly, but for the peace of mind the meshes bring, we can live with it.
2. There will be dust trapped on the mesh. Recommend to clean it once every week or every 2 weeks. We use a mesh brush as well as wet tissue. However we do find a wet tissue is more effective.
3. Occasionally there are a few small fruit flies / ting insects that can come through. This was also something the vendor had shared with us when they came to do the measurements.
