If you've read our previous posts, you'll realise that we (or maybe just one of us hehe) can get quite obsessive about small house details - measurements, colours and all that.
But alas! Even the mighty are not invincible all the time - so here's some of the things we forgot to account for during renovation and how our home aesthetics have... suffered as a result.
Always thought we'd keep our laundry basket in the bathroom BUT we realise that the floor of the bathroom does get wet and it's a potential mould hazard :( We use a plastic laundry basket so it's not likely to get water damaged, but it does trap water around the grouting and corners of the floor.
The compromise? We have the basket at the entrance of the bathroom like this - it also means our bathmat THAT SPECIFICALLY MATCHED THE WIDTH OF THE DOOR had to be shifted, so everything looks a bit off now.
In hindsight, we might have reduced the length of our wardrobe to allocate some space for the laundry basket :(
We really want to save the earth so we always try to do our recycling properly - but we also forgot to allocate a corner to keep all the recyclables :(
We don't keep them together with the trash because... there's no space in the kitchen where our usual trash bin is. We usually accumulate quite a bit of recyclables before we bring them downstairs to the recycling bin, and we've thus had to create this mini recycling corner beside our front door T.T
It looks terrible LOL but it's also the most convenient solution... and we try to clear everything before we have guests over so nobody knows how much our house looks like a slum :)
The next thing we forgot about? Our ironing board LOL.
We always used to hide the ironing board in the cupboard/behind the door in our previous homes but that has become unfortunately impossible because guess WHO DECIDED TO UPGRADE TO A GARMENT STEAMER with a huge water tank T.T
(the answer is me, so I can only blame myself)
This garment steamer thing also requires a power socket + the water drips sometimes when we refill it, so there's no hiding it in any cupboards this time. We've parked it in this gap in between our display cabinet and work desk so... I guess the anime figurines in our house get a free steam facial every time we steam our clothes :)
Ok - we didn't exactly 'forget' this one - we do have a drawer for our baking pans/tins right below the oven. It was built to help elevate the oven (so no bending too low every time we use it), while also conveniently storing all the cooking/baking essentials like aluminium foil, baking paper, etc.
Sounds like a dream solution right?
That's until we realised that our baking trays are VERY LARGE so if we stored them in the drawer, they would only fit at the bottom and taking out one tray would mean emptying the whole drawer :(
That's why the trays are now awkwardly balanced on this helpful gap between the oven and the carpentry - we remove them whenever we use the oven.
Next time, we're getting vertical storage for these pans.
Is it really a home if you don't have some random clothes draped over a chair? :P
But on a more serious note, our towels have found their homes permanently on the back of our dining chairs - not because we don't have towel hooks in the bathroom (WE DO! Six of them in fact!) but that we realised that they take super long to dry if we leave them in the bathroom after a shower :(
Highly recommend every new homeowner to allocate a space for damp towels after showers (not against a wall/wooden surface cos of the moisture) or just have really, really, really good bathroom ventilation.
And that's all for the things we missed during reno - are there any areas that you've missed as well? Let us know in the comments!
