We're the @autumnal.abode and we have a 1,001 sqft North-South facing home in the Central East region. Our home is a 5-year-old (newly MOP-ed) resale flat which we bought in 2021, at the height of the pandemic. We were rushing to find a place to stay after we got married, and could not afford to wait for a BTO.

We opted for a Japandi-style home - with neutrals accentuated by dark accents. We did not have an ID - we worked solely with a contractor. We love that we built the design of our home through furniture pieces & diy.

Slowly grow into your home. We started off with an empty home with minimal furniture except the essentials - sofa, tv, dining set and our bed - and we slowly bought more furniture to meet our living needs and lifestyle. If we had more budget, we would do more reno. Factors such as budget, living habits, future plans all affect your reno and furniture decisions (:

We did a lot of DIY like this industrial mirror wall which helps to open up our space a lot more. We also included functional furniture that serves multiple purposes. We hunted down this slim shoe cabinet that can serve as our entryway console.

We kept the existing carpentry in the kitchen and master bedroom, and we did not hack any walls. It was during the pandemic with severe labour shortages and renovations delays, so we made do with minimal renovations (vinyl flooring, painting & toilet tile layovers) and we were done with reno in 2 weeks.

We used a software to draw out our home and plan how to place our furniture.

This was the render done for us by our contractor. One thing to note about renders is that they do not fully encapsulate factors such as lighting. Our toilets look nothing like these now!

If we could, we would have spent more on renovation. But now, we're slowly upgrading our home in segments!

As we both work in the office on weekdays, we do our chores on Sundays. We recently got a robot vacuum and that has helped us greatly in keeping our home dust-free.

We bought a 2.4m extendable dining table so that we can host big groups in our not-so-big home.

A tip we have for new homeowners - grow into your new home. We chose to slowly buy our furniture and have mini home upgrades over the months (: Getting married, buying a house, doing reno (not to mention purchasing furniture and appliances) all in the same year requires a huuuge financial outlay. Looking back, we’re glad we also spaced out our purchases and also put alot of thought into our furniture.

We spend most of our time in our living room and the bedroom. So that was where we invested in good quality furniture.
