Since most of our house walls are painted white, we chose white carpentry with recessed handles to blend in the bomb shelter and DB box so they don’t stand out. Instead of covering just half of the bomb shelter, we extended the carpentry across the entire area, and we are really glad we did (although it did cost more), it provides extra storage space without looking bulky. We added three niches to display photo frames from our pre-wedding shoots. We considered extending the niches all the way to the ceiling, but decided against it. Looking back, we feel this was the right choice because higher niches are hard to see, add extra cost and tend to trap dust.
We added an arch curved partition to hide all the messy wires behind the TV, paired with floating cabinetry to house our switches.
A little backstory here. Our original plan was to use gypsum board to create the arched partition, thinking we could apply laminate over it (we even chose the laminate already HAHA). Later on, we realised that laminate requires a completely flat and stable surface, so gypsum board would not have worked for this purpose. We did consider switching to full carpentry so we could apply the laminate that we chose, but that option would have been more expensive. In the end, we decided to stick with gypsum board and limewashed over it. It still looks cohesive and blends nicely with the rest of the living room, so no regrets at all!
The reason why we engaged limewash service because the main colour of the house is white, we wanted something warmer and cozier for the living room. Both the back of the sofa wall and the arch TV wall were limewashed in the same colour so it looks cohesive from the entryway. The limewash effect is especially accentuated under warm lighting, which makes the space feel more inviting. In hindsight, we probably should have chosen a sofa colour with more contrast. Since the limewash was done before the sofa arrived, it was hard to visualise the final look at the time. Oh well! On the bright side, we added pillows in contrasting colours, which help to lift the space slightly.
We also did false ceiling for the living room only, so we could install floating light that starts from the entrance. This helped us save some cost! We have found ourselves using the floating lights more often at night, especially when we are binge-watching dramas together, it creates such a cozy vibe! We also got a rug to add a bit more coziness to the living room and the best part is that it is still easy to maintain because our Dreame Robot can vacuum it without issues.
The story behind our design continues in the next post!
