Best home investments: Needs vs wants.

Not kidding but the first purchase for the home was Luxus Digital Lock. I love how sleek it is and seamless it can be on the door. I hope digital locks can slowly shift away from only black! Initially, I bought the earlier model but upgraded midway to the latest. Now, I can enter my home using not just the usual thumbprint, pin, card but also facial recognition or palm recognition. It helps when hands are filled or dirty to touch the print pad. Insects are a bane to me hence the Maxseal door drop is also a necessity! It blocks out the creepy crawlies for me when the door is closed. After living in my home for some time, I also added on the digital doorbell. It allows me to view my corridor and also respond/speak to the delivery people in a 2 way communication from my phone. It's also a good purchase from the point of view of safety aspect if you have weird neighbours or your unit is extremely exposed. Water dispenser is also a must-have for me but for some, it may be a good-to-have item. I do not want to take too much time to boil water over and over again especially when I consume a lot of water daily. In addition, I love having warm water in the morning to wake the gut up. How lovely it is to get warm water with just a press of a button. Some considerations before purchase would be your budget, table space, colour/aesthetics, temperature options, mode and frequency of filter change or even placement of dispenser. These will affect which brand or model you will go for. For Wells, you will need an input and output water pipes while other models just require one. This will also limit to where you can place Wells. Of course unless you're hacking your kitchen floor tiles, then options are limitless because your pipes can run below your feet! During my entire reno process, the home experienced major winds and my entire team of contractors/vendors all enjoyed their time in the home. It made it seems like there is no need for any ceiling fan but consider the different months of the year! I'm so glad that I made that decision for ceiling fan because it's just so warm in the beginning of the year! Think about the height of ceiling from the floor and also if you have false ceiling. I had a 10cm drop from my false ceiling hence I had to get a shorter body for my ceiling fan. In addition, the blades of the fan should not be affecting the light cast down as well or you will have unwanted disco lighting at home. Dehumidifier was also on my to-buy list which eventually fell into my housewarming gift lift. This is an item that is necessary especially in the Singapore climate. Removing excess water vapour in the surroundings will help preserve our furniture better and prevent mould from growing on our walls. Novita was recommended to me by another homeowner and I love how the colours blend in with my home theme. Somehow, it becomes part of the display of the home instead of just an appliance. Curtains! It's a must-have for me instead of blinds. Curtains soften the entire look of the home and it is also part of the detail that brings out the theme of the home. Having both day and night curtains will also filter the amount of light entering the home. It allows the character of the space to be elevated. When choosing curtains, do take note of the amount of light each material will allow in. That will be in addition of the touch of the material, colour and grains. To be consistent, I used the same day and night curtains for all rooms. Heat treatment was also added to the curtains to maintain the folds and sustain the look of the curtains. That also means that the curtains can no longer be sent to dry cleaning but only steam cleaning is possible. No more taking down and hanging up the curtains anymore! One less chore to do! One of my last investment I added recently is INSECT NET. Love how seamless it is and it cannot even be seen clearly! Initially, I was only surviving with having one window opened at night because of the fear of insects coming in. With the insect net installed at my service yard, I can keep my windows open and have more ventilation at night! There are certain items that are really the best investment of the home. Calculate your budget and set aside what you will like to purchase first! There is no rush to buy everything the moment you move in but, slowly add on along the way. Sometimes after living in the home for awhile, you will eventually figure out what you need/want!
