Let’s be honest - we didn’t choose crystal glass backsplash because we really wanted it at the start. We chose it because… we ran out of budget and couldn’t afford to sintered stone our backsplash 🤣
(We also considered tiles b ut those are expensive too and Duck is allergic to cleaning grout lines 😛)
But fast forward a couple of years later, we’re happy to say that it was such a great decision! Here’s why we love this crystal glass backsplash and would probably get it again if we could
(Apologies for the terrible photo - I have no idea how to take photos of reflective glass 😅 )
We have the backsplash in our dry pantry area too - and that has made it an excellent and super functional whiteboard for our household command centre!
We use it to jot down important things, which could be anything like appointments in this case (so Frog doesn’t wake up and think his wife is missing?!? when she’s actually just gone for yoga class)…
… or a list of chores whenever we need to do a major cleaning. We could technically write this down in our planners or on a piece of paper, but nothing beats this gigantic 1.5m long whiteboard for visibility 🤣
Plus, frog can’t say that he’s not aware of his chores when he has to stare at those words every time he gets a drink of water 🙂
Another function that’s been really helpful is using it to write down our wifi password when we have friends over!
(Not including our pw here but yes the wifi is The Duck Web #iykyk)
It’s also helpful when we play board games and need somewhere to keep score :)
Have you ever tried to cook AND check the recipe on your phone at the same time?
Well Duck likes to jot down key pointers for whatever she’s cooking on the backsplash right in front of the stove so she doesn’t have to touch her phone with sticky or worse, fishy hands and still make sure she gets the recipe right!
I don’t wrote down everything as in the whole recipe, but just important ratios (like what to add in the sauce) or how long the cooking timing is, etc because I’m bad at remembering numbers 🫠
Cleaning has also been a breeze - we write on our board with normal whiteboard markers (we buy like 3-5 at one go for 5 RM from JB 🤣) and everything comes off with one wipe when we use our method all purpose cleaner!
You don’t have to use this of course - any wet tissue or just a cloth with water works too (but we like the scent of the cleaner hehe). Wouldn’t recommend a duster though - because of the powdery stuff that we don’t want to be in close contact with our food.
And of course, Duck uses the board to issue unavoidable big warnings when she’s not happy about something 🤣 once again, Frog can miss texts and forget about notes in his planner but he cannot say he didn’t read this because it’s a giant notice in front of our water jug 🙂
Probably not the best method for relationship communication though 🤣
Also last pro tip before we end this post - if you’re considering a glass backsplash, note that glass HAS colour!!! Glass is NOT transparent (despite what they teach you in school) so you’ll need to check how the glass shows up against the wall behind it.
We opted for white glass against white walls ( our resale kitchen did not come with tiles in those area) and we can still see a subtle tint of green in the glass from some angles. If you’re mounting the backsplash against a darker tile or coloured walls, you might not be able to get such a nice “whiteboard” effect because the colour will be too dark for the markers to show up properly. We’re not experts - definitely consult your ID/contractor on this!
