Our contractor was great, quick and efficient.
Honestly, we were a tad too hands off.
When she asked us what we needed for the kitchen, being total kitchen noobs, we said, “Let’s just get the standardised ones. We don’t cook much. Doubt it matters.”
Big mistake.
Because apparently… being 155cm is NOT the standard.
For months after moving in, I was tiptoeing every single day after washing dishes. And after a while I just quietly decided… I am not washing any.
Second tier of the dish rack? Cannot see.
If my husband puts cups on the top rack, good luck. I either forget about drinking water for the day or drag a chair over to climb up. Very safe, very stable, very unnecessary cardio.
Utensils? Must blindly feel around and hope for the best. Usually three tries before I get the right one. Spoon? Fork? Chopsticks? It’s a lucky draw.
That’s when we realised something very important.
Standard fittings are built for “average” height, not necessarily YOUR height.
Major thanks to KKPL, the kitchen shorties’ saviour. They kindly installed the Chestnut One-North Pull Down Dish Rack for us, and honestly this small change made a huge difference to daily life.
What I love is that it’s not just a pull-down rack. It actually feels well engineered.
It’s made of SUS 304 stainless steel and aluminium alloy with pressure chrome treatment, which basically means it’s sturdy and rust resistant. In our humid Singapore weather, that matters more than we think.
The movement is smooth and controlled because of the directional lever adjustment system. It adapts to the weight of whatever you put inside, so even if the basket is heavier, it doesn’t suddenly drop down. It feels stable and safe.
Each basket supports up to 10kg, which is honestly more than enough for our daily dishes. And there’s an assisted drop down mechanism, so I can pull it to eye level easily and push it back up without struggling.
Another detail I appreciate is the integrated drainage tray. Water from drying dishes doesn’t drip all over the cabinet interior, which means less wiping and less long term damage.
It fits cabinet interiors with a minimum height of 650mm, so if you’re planning your carpentry, do check this early.
Available sizes are:
564 x 290 x 570mm for 600mm cabinets
764 x 290 x 570mm for 800mm cabinets
864 x 290 x 570mm for 900mm cabinets
Now I can actually see what I’m doing when I load the dishes. No tiptoeing. No guessing. No climbing on chairs.
And yes, now I actually do the dishes.
Husband happy. Wife happy. Marriage saved by better kitchen ergonomics.
If you’re in the middle of renovation planning, don’t just say “standard can already” like we did.
Think about how you actually use the kitchen.
Think about your height.
Think about daily habits.
Because sometimes the smallest functional upgrade makes the biggest difference in everyday living.
Lesson learnt.
Standard doesn’t mean standard for you.
