This is our favourite space in the house because it really reflects our personality. Due to the BTO pipe structure, our kitchen ended up having two layers of cabinets. What first felt like a limitation actually became a blessing in disguise because it allowed us to mix two colours that we love and add more depth and character to the space 🤍
We also opted for a closed-concept kitchen by adding matching glass sliding doors for both the kitchen and service yard. The kitchen doors slide both ways, making them really convenient to use and easier to maintain. When we switch on the living room aircon, we can simply slide the doors closed. They do a great job of keeping smells and heat from spreading, while still letting light through so the space feels bright and open. That said, sometimes we leave the doors open when we are doing simple meal prep without strong smells, so we still have the option of enjoying an open-concept kitchen.
One practical tip we learned during planning is to place the dishwasher right beside the sink, so dirty cookware can go straight in without dripping water across the floor. We also chose to have our drawers located just below the induction stove, which makes it very convenient to reach for utensils while cooking.
After living here for about 2 months, one thing we truly appreciate is the generous countertop space. Instead of installing a tall unit beside the fridge to house our oven, we kept the area open so we have more room to prep ingredients and spread out cookware while cooking.
Same for our Dry Pantry area, we also installed a Nexen power track so we can use multiple appliances without constantly plugging and unplugging them. The wires can be neatly concealed behind the appliance. Our bulky water dispenser is tucked beside the fridge’s side panel to keep it out of sight and maintain a cleaner visual flow.
One small feature we ended up loving is the niche on the second layer of the cabinets. It was not part of the original plan but our top and lower cabinets don’t align. We are very OCD about these things, so the alignment really mattered to us. At first, we did not know what to use the niche for, but it ended up becoming a really practical space. We now store dry goods like potatoes, onions, and garlic there. The space is dark and well ventilated, which helps keep them longer. The only small downside is that it can collect dust, so we just make sure to clean it regularly.
Lighting was another thing we planned carefully. We installed both under cabinet LED lighting for food preparation and ceiling lights for overall brightness. In reality, we find ourselves using the under-cabinet lights more often since the light source is right in front of us while cooking and the brightness is already more than enough. It also makes the kitchen feel cozy and inviting.
Oh yes! Do you know most fridges these days have rollers underneath? Super handy when we need to slide it out for cleaning! 😍
