Right off the bat, we decided that we wanted the balcony to be an extension of our living/dining space. Rather than just using it as a space to put our clothes rack, we envisaged that we would have meals and relax there.

This meant that we had to find ways to balance aesthetics and functionality. The above image is our balcony in its very early state - due to restrictions on the external facade of the building, we had to work with a rather unattractive colour scheme of grey and brown. We also installed zip blinds to keep rain out. However, as the zip blinds come with a rain sensor (and automatically closes when it rains), we had to install smart home features that would allow us to manually re-open the zip blinds, to ensure that our plants get enough light throughout the day.

That didn’t stop us from growing plants though - we started small (with a few small plants and cuttings kindly donated by friends and family), and eventually we had a mini garden! Our plants may not be the most curated or aesthetic but they are lovingly grown, with an assortment of pots largely from Carousell :-) also, spot the smiski! For storage and our plant rack, use Hyllis shelves from IKEA, which are such a pain to assemble but great in terms of price point, aesthetic and functionality.

We also have the fortune of having a semi-unblocked view from our balcony! In the evenings, we have some west sun and often get to see the sunset from the right side of the balcony.

We love having our meals here in the evenings, and we have dinner here most of the time. Because we don’t have a fan directly above our dining area, it’s often cooler to eat out here when we don’t switch on the aircon, and it’s nice to eat amongst the greenery of our mini garden 🌱
