We were quickly humbled when shopping for furnishing and decor, simply because everything nice or unique costed so much—I decided to DIY and replicate some of the items at a much more affordable cost, read on to find out more on how you can do the same for your house!
Found a sculptural brass gold wine rack but costed $70, so came the Taobao replicate at $5. It was only in certain colours such as white or a bright red which wasn't the vibe i was looking for; but with the help of some brass gold spray paint, I was able to recreate something similar for way cheaper. Granted the paint might peel some time later, but it works just fine for now!
Did the same for this mirror tray as I wanted it in a matching colour as the wine rack, and most of these trays sold on Taobao were only in either in a glossy gold or silver. Really love how the spray paint turned out 😁
A LED mirror I got off Taobao—one thing about Taobao reviews is that the colour expectation could turn out to be vastly different due to how heavily filtered the photos are even on reviews! It was also hard to colour match with our carpentry since these were just digital images online, and it turned out to be a very warm reddish wood colour.
There are surely better ways to “tweak” this colour, but I was simply exhausted during this period and my quick solution was to paint over with the Bondex paint in Walnut. The paint also came in extremely handy to touch up some other wood furnitures where some scratches occured!
Another cheat hack I found was the laminate sticker sheets from Taobao. We had several electrical casings in the kitchen and toilets. These were painted over in a colour similar to the wall tiles, but definitely lacks the texture our tiles had. I managed to source for such laminate stickers for under $10, and although they aren’t 100% similar looking as the wall tiles, I felt that these were the closest I could get to avoid such an eyesore.
We originally planned to cover up the aircon pipings with these sticker sheets as well; but seeing how the pipings needed to be accessed when we first faced an A/C issue, I decided to simply leave them be as they are.
