I had such a fun time scouring Pinterest for intuitive but aesthestic wardrobe configurations. Ours was a simple but efficient layout that works well for our day to day activities
1. Hanging VS drawers/ cubby holes
Its so important to cater to sufficient hanging space especially when you know you dont like foling and organizing clothes in your drawers.
I’ve opted for small drawers for my gymwear, home clothes, undies and the top smaller drawer for my skincare and randos
I catered for so much hanging space that theres still a full rack that is empty
2. Open shelving
It is actually so important to have some open shelving. I use them for my daily essentails - lile hair ties, skincare and my accessory shelf.
One pinterest hack:
Half shelving
This works so well for us because the conventional shelves can be too short for longer items
3. Envisioning the space
Of course we girls want a huge closet space. I actually considered doing an L shaped wardrobe so that i have even more space.
But L shaped closets usually have a dead space at the corner.. so i decided on a simple full length sliding wardrobe
Theres so many options to envision the wardrobe space. As we didnt have an ID, i just drew rough spaces of where our other furnitures would be and see how our wardrobe will work together w our other items
4. Lighting
This sort of ties with point 3 because when envisioning the space, you need to cater for nighttime wardrobe digging
I’ve requested for built in LED strips on all the hanging rack areas.
A little regret that i didnt request one for my shelving side (i have to use the wardrobe rack side for my night light)
5. Heights
Its your custom carpentry, so the heights and widths should cater to your clothings and items.
While there is an industry standard - meaning there is a min. and max. for all dimensions, discuss with your ID or contractor if an exception can be made for your long jeans or dresses, or altering drawer heights so you can stuff more of your gymwear
6. Conceptualization
Pinterest is fun and all, but keep in mind that the space may have random awnings or power points that just cant cater to your dream design. I think having an open mind and being felxible can make the wardrobe designing journey - or the whole renovation journey so much more fun
7. Costs.
I think we really lucked out with our contractor. (Plus i think i am quite an efficient pinterest moodboard-er) so i kept an open mind to what we can and cannot do.
I initially wanted full height sliding doors, but was restricted by the max. laminate height. the LED strips and the smooth sliding doors were such a blessing even though we had to pay more.
I would say, try and keep a balance between spluring on the things you would use daily (LED lights, premium sliding doors), and saving on things in the wardrobe that you wont notice (inner laminate material, rack material, cutting additional drawers if not needed).
Well, i guess these are just some of my learnings! Happy to share more if you guys are keen :)
