Despite having lived in our place for more than a year, our bomb shelter is (imo) still pretty neat and organised - here are some tips on how we get it to this state!
Tip #1: MUST get a storage rack
This is probably really common advice, but getting a storage rack was a game changer for us!! This allows you to make use of the vertical space in the bomb shelter, while keeping things neat but accessible.
Tip #2: Keep items flushed to the side
All our long and flat items (think vacuum cleaner, mop, ironing board) are kept upright and to the side, so they take up less space.
Tip #3: Storage boxes are your best friend
We bought several large storage boxes to keep our smaller items in. This makes the shelves look more uniform and less cluttered.
Tip #4: Don’t be afraid to make use of space on top…
We keep bulky and less-commonly used items, such as suitcases, on top of our storage rack. This frees up space on the shelves to store items that we’d need to reach for more often.
Tip #5: …and at the bottom!
To make FULL use of the space, we keep rarely/never-used items, like our spare tiles, underneath the storage rack. Hey, you never know when we may need to use them!
Tip #6: Keep bad odours and humidity at bay
By now you might have noticed the may Thirsty Hippos scattered throughout the bomb shelter. Since Singapore is so humid, this is a must to make sure your stuff stays mould free!
The candle was another great idea suggested by a family member, as bomb shelters tend to smell “stale”. Now ours smells like cherry blossoms! :D
Bonus tip: Save room for things that matter!
Don’t make it a challenge to fill your bomb shelter to the brim, regularly get rid of stuff that you don’t use often. This frees up space for new hobbies like snowboard bindings!
P.s. we have snowboards tucked away in this bomb shelter too, can you guess where? 👀
