BTO/Resale/SBF
The usual 3 suspects when taking about affordable housing in singapore.
I was on the camp for BTO housing, as i saw no rush despite us nearing our last years of twenties this year.
We tried for Oct 2024’s ballot, but failed. After that letter of rejcetion from HDB, i was open to WINDOW shopping for units
So we begain our search in end Oct and settled on a unit by end Dec..
Thats a very quick 2 months, given that i felt no rush nor had the urgent need to move out.
We went WINDOW shopping with a clear checklist, and was blessed with this unit that checked all boxes.
We immediately offered.
But then here comes the unseen parts;
Prior to going WINDOW shopping, and prior to all those open houses, and wayyy before we balloted for the Oct 2025 BTO, we did a comprehensive spreadsheet.
We listed all out assets, cash on hand and extra sources of income in the forseeable future.
We planned ahead (actually it was all Mr Bee). Having a forcast of our financial status in 6-8 months was really helpful in the near term budgeting and planning
Down payment was a huge chunk and to be honest, we almost depleted all of our savings amd CPF buying this home.
But it made sense for us, when we are at a lifestage for settling down and do not want kids. The option of a condo allows us to sell off our unit earlier than HDBs, buying at the time we did let us take advantage of the 3 year holding period, which as of Jul 2025 changed to 4 years
But our plan is not a complete one as we remain open and flexible to changes in the future - do we want to upgrade to a 2 BR in the future? Or find a nice HBD in our favourite neighbourhood to stay till we retire?
I think being on the same page and being clear about what we forsee ourselves in 1-5 years helps put into persepctive as well as set expectations for each other.
I do not regret my decision, as there are always two sides to every coin. Im still happy to have a place to call my own. And spending fridays just staying in w Mr Bee is so simple but so fulfilling in itself
What are some of your concerns or questions regarding choosing the condo route in Singapore?
For me personally, i wish housing expenses werent so high in Singapore, but we trade expensive housing for convenience and safety.
As someone navigating her last years of 20s, I struggle with finding average persons to be a role model to my life. Social media has warped our expectation of BTO luck/ buying private homes in our early 20s and the need to flex a “luxrious” life
Having lived in this tiny home for 6 months now, i have learnt to love and accept the imperfections and embrace my choices - both the good and the bad.
Afterall, we are first time humans
I’d love to hear your thoughts and make some friends on this new homeowner phase too 😇
