Hello there! Welcome to this episode of our Reno Regrets - where we talk about our light and fan decisions and what we would probably have done differently if we had more time, energy and budget.
Quick disclaimer before we got started is that we made most of these lighting/fan decisions on our own without our ID, and weāre newbies at interior design so well, mistakes were definitely made.
So hereās some of our thoughts about our decisions and what we would probably do differently if we had another house or if we could go back in time and make better decisions for ourselves.
1. Keeping ceiling fans from the previous homeowners
We actually inherited the fans from the previous owners of the house - and decided not to change the fans in the three bedrooms. At the time, it seemed like a great way to save money because the fans were working AND they came with lights as well.
Why this was a bad decision:
šThe fans are actually pretty loud - itās not something we thought about when we first turned on the fans before reno, but itās one of those things that we slowly started to realise over time.
(So if youāre taking over any ceiling fans from previous homeowners, be sure to make sure you want to keep them only after youāve observed them running for a good amount of time)
šThe lights are pretty dim so studying/reading with just the fan lights can get pretty taxing on the eyes after a while.
šOne of the fans broke down a few months after we moved in LOL. So we had to replace it anyway - and then spend 1 hour mopping the floor and cleaning the dust and remnants from the fan installationš
2. DIMMABLE LIGHTS are a must
We got our living room and dining area fans from Crestar during reno - they were affordable, good quality and we also got to try them out at the store. And tbh, after almost two years of using them, theyāve been working perfectly and we havenāt had any complaints about them.
BUT then when one of our fans broke down (see point above lol), we decided to explore new options for fans in the market and we found the Mistral Solar fan - which is clearly superior as compared to the ones we previously bought.
The hugger comes with an option to reverse the blades, which is excellent for helping to spread cool air throughout the room when we have the aircon on. It also has dimmable lights! This is great because we can dim the lights if weāre just watching a movie or doing a workout so itās not so harsh on the eyes, but also brighten the room for work.
SO if youāre shopping for fans with lights, make sure yours comes with a dim option!
3. Getting a kitchen corner fan
Famous last words - āWe have an open service yard and a really breezy kitchen so we donāt need a kitchen fan right?ā
Nope.
GET A KITCHEN FAN.
We realise life would definitely be much better with a kitchen fan right here in the corner above our oven/airfryer. It would help to dissipate the heat from our appliances and also help maintain airflow in kitchen (because natural wind is strong, but we canāt summon it whenever we want). It would also be really nice to have some extra wind power to help our dishes dry faster, and help the floor dry faster too after mopping.
Best thing is, it seems like itās too late for us to get a fan now because we would have to hack through the walls to pull out a new power point, AND the walls are tiled so weād also have to replace the tiles and that just looks like a whole lot of effort, trouble, mess and disruptions.
TLDR: get a corner fan for your kitchen and donāt be like us.
4. Being more bold with our bedside lights
One thing I really regret is⦠not getting bedside lamps. I always had a thing for those cute built-in bedside lamps, but we had a fear of commitment and didnāt want to get something that was temporarily in trend but would start to look tacky after time. We also thought about things like⦠what if we wanted to move our bed? What if we didnāt like the lamps? What if we got the super cute pendant lamps and they swing around and bang into our heads?
Well⦠itās been two years and our bed has not moved A SINGLE INCH. Itās also too late to pull new power points to install any super-cute built in lamps, so weāve been looking at the less-sleek solution of getting power cord extensions and plug in lamps.
So I guess the moral of the story here is⦠if you want bedside lamps, then install bedside lamps.
