As first-time homeowners without an ID, this was honestly the worst. We had no idea where to even begin, and there weren’t many references online either. Huge kudos to Wayne for shouldering this entire nightmare because I honestly would have given up.
After many trials and errors, we finally came up with a plan for ourselves (which our contractor… didn’t even end up using, hahaha).
Here are a few key things we learned:
• Types of lights — With so many options out there, it can get overwhelming. For some inspiration, check out Shiok Lighting, North Star Lighting, and Sol Luminaire. (and if budget allows, i’ve heard great things about their quality!)
• Fan placement — Keep them far enough from your lights to avoid awkward shadowing.
• Extra power points — You’ll always need more than you think.
• 1-gang 2-way switches — So you can control lights from both ends of the room.
• Think about function — E.g., a TV console area will need extra power points, while beside the bed, I needed 2x13A outlets for my phone charger and lamp.
For those curious about cost, here’s our contractor’s invoice too — so you can get an idea of how much each point costs. We ended up with quite a few concealed lighting points since we decided not to do a false ceiling.
Enough talking — here’s our amateur, makeshift electrical and lighting plan. Hope it helps! If you’ve got questions or would like a clearer picture, DM us over at @oliveourhaus and we’ll try (keyword: try) to help.
Also, special shoutout to the best DIYovation — where we got all our lighting, electrical works, fans, and even shower sets sorted!
