The dining area was one of the most important areas of our home, and we went back and forth on it several times.
We don’t host often, but we also didn’t want our guests to feel uncomfortable when they come over.
Many questions came to mind when we were picking the furniture for this area. Should we make do with a bigger dining table instead of an extendable one? Or should we have more dining chairs so that our guests can be more comfortable?
With so many questions up in the air, we ultimately narrowed down our requirements for the dining area to:
🤎 Easy maintenance
🤎 Compact enough so that it doesn’t eat into our walking area, yet big enough for when we want to host
🤎 The seats have to be solid because feeling unstable is the last thing that we’d want our guests to experience (there are many aesthetic chairs out there, but half of them always feel like they cannot support the weight of your problems, so always test them out and don’t buy blindly!)
When having a dilemma on furniture, here’s a tip from us: use masking tape to line out the dimensions of your shortlisted furniture on the floor.
That’s what we did when we were double confirming the size of our dining table to estimate the walkway around it, and if it’ll be too small or big for the space.
Whether or not to have a bench or dining chairs on the inside against the wall was also a concern, because having dining chairs would mean that we’ll have to set aside even more space for the chairs to move closer and further away from the table.
In the end, we went with a 1.6m table that can be extended to 1.8m, along with two loose dining chairs and a bench on the inside against the wall. With guests over, we’ll just pop out the stools from the storeroom.
Happy to report that we are quite happy with our current configuration because it serves its purpose well so far ✌🏻
And if you haven’t started on your reno yet, here’s your reminder to place a switch near to the dining table for hotpot.
