Hi everyone! Just popping in to share a few of our renovation regrets! I hope this are useful pointers for new homeowners who are knee-deep in reno planning. But buckle up though, because this post’s about to get a little spicy 😤
As mentioned in our earlier post on the master bathroom, one detail that still bugs me to this day is the misaligned grout lines with the shelves. I’ve tried styling around it with various items to visually mask the issue, but it’s one of those tiny things that continues to annoy me.. even after two years of living here.
Another one that’s hard to ignore: the dreadful aircon trunking.
It somehow ended up earning a forever spot in our home. I’m not sure if this was a direct result of us choosing not to go with our ID’s recommended aircon vendor, but the bigger regret is that our ID never flagged this as a potential outcome, which to us was something that could have been avoided with better communication...
On the topic of aircon.. The aircon placement in our walk-in wardrobe was a whole saga on its own.. It was installed right in the path of the first wardrobe door, which meant we had to:
1/ Remove the cove lighting that had already been set up
2/ Reposition the aircon unit entirely
3/ Patch and make good the wall (hello extra cost and delay 😩)
And not to mention, this was after we had clearly shared our planned aircon positions with the ID! So while we did our part in doing the due diligence, the oversight still happened and it’s a good reminder that communication alone isn’t enough; execution matters just as much..
In the living room, we clearly remember voicing out that we wanted a power point behind the sofa. Though at the time, we hadn’t decided on getting a recliner yet, but still thought it’d be a practical addition.
Our ID, however, assured us that the nearby socket would be enough — so we took her word for it.
And guess who’s the clown now, using extension plugs to make it work? 🙃
And of course, our entryway floor tile deserves an honorary mention in this post of regrets. It was honestly the biggest headache (and heartache) of the reno, but thankfully, we’ve since fixed it and it’s been holding up well!
If you’re curious, do check out my earlier post: How We’re Transforming Our Entryway (Before + Pre-After!)
To close off this rant (lol), I really wish our ID had suggested extending the kitchen out to this wall and turning it into a dry pantry. It would’ve been the perfect spot for a little coffee station or makeshift bar, and way more functional for storing small appliances and freeing up our main kitchen counter.
Thank you for attending _nullhaus’ Rant Talk. 🤓
If you’re in the middle of your own reno journey, I hope these are good pointers for you to have in mind!
