How does your home come to be: from original plans to final outcome? We’ve all heard about the horror stories online from IDs ghosting to giving subpar work.
As a type A person, Mrs gangsagem wanted to feel more control over the project and save cost at the same time so we ended up going with a main contractor.
Our initial plan was to have more wood grains in our home in our cabinetry and furniture (Japandi Style), but how did that change?
This is the inspo board we sent out to various IDs and contractors in the initial stages.
The only wood grain we retained from the original home is the previous owner’s table. Again, it was to help us with our budget because we actually preferred a bleached wood grain look. But this is something we can change out in future.
As you can see, we transitioned to a cream-based minimalist home instead since we also retained the existing glossy floor tiles.
Although we had planned to retain most of the kitchen and its tiles, our main con helped us realise that the tiles were hollow during his first inspection.
This was devastating cost-wise since it meant a drastic change in our budget but at least we were able to choose a warm tile that many of the sub contractors said was very nice.
Here’s where it gets weird:
Since we retained the carpentry, the tiles on the side of the existing carpentry were not changed at all. 😆 You can see the difference between left and right on this photo.
It’s something we’re cool with, and the glossy tiles and backsplash on the left do help to make cleaning a tad easier.
Love the sun that streams in in the morning. During daytime, our tiles feel warm-toned, whereas when illuminated by our track lights at night, our tiles give off a grey hue.
Our tile code is SMMIL 1 from Hafary if you’re interested.
Lending another element of wood we originally wanted not in our carpentry but in our vinyl floor tiles. Our main con says his supplier is from Belgium so the quality is better. So far they’ve been holding up well and they truly give off the look we were after.
(P.S. We were not initially offered this vinyl tile colour. Had to ask if there was something more grey-ish/bleached and only after our main con checked with his sub con did we get offered this.)
To ensure the wooden table matched the cream house now, we surrounded it with white fixtures and furnitures: our Teodores dining chair from Ikea, our white power track from Tampoi and our white tissue case from Shopee.
Our wood vinyl tiles can be seen in our bedroom as well to give off a warm cosy vibe.
So from render to reality, that’s how we progressed from a Japandi intention to a cream minimalist home (mostly).
