Even though it’s getting more common to extend one’s kitchen into the service yard to make the kitchen look more spacious, hacking down our service yard walls to extend our kitchen has never crossed our minds during our renovation planning stage and we’re so glad to have a separate kitchen & service yard space now — read on to find out why!
1. Cooking will never be at the mercy of laundry
This is the top reason why we want to have a separate kitchen and service yard! Back at my parents’ place, we’d have to keep all our clothes before any form of cooking, because even the simplest cooking can cause unpleasant smells to linger on our clothes. Now, we get to cook as and when we want to without having to take laundry into account. We can’t imagine having to keep our laundry first before we cook each time 🥹😮💨 In fact, sometimes we cook right after we hang the laundry!
2. No extra effort to ensure laundry doesn’t smell bad
There are many solutions to ensure that clothes do not smell bad when cooking in an open kitchen with hanging laundry e.g. air purifier, fragrance spray etc. However, we’d ideally like to be able to minimise this extra step where possible, and for us, the most straightforward solution is to keep the laundry area separate from the cooking zone :)
3. Save on hacking & carpentry cost
With less hacking done and less carpentry built, we definitely managed to save some costs :)
