As one of the few people we know who have BOTH curtains and blinds in our home - we felt compelled to make a comparison between these two options after living with them for more than two years.
For context, we have full length curtains in our living room (both day and night curtains) and zebra/korean style blinds for all our bedrooms. Everything (from the curtains to the rail to the blinds) were entirely customized and bought on Taobao to save money hahaha.
So here're some factors you can consider if you're also on the fence between windows and curtains
π‘ Options for customisation: Curtains!
There are soooo many options for customising curtains, mainly because you can choose day AND night curtains + the many types of folds (S Folds, Ripple Folds, etc) - we were absolutely spoilt for choice when choosing our own because of the sheer number of colours and fabrics available.
It's also why/how we managed to find this exact shade of blue for our living room curtains to match our dry pantry for that cohesive visual effect.
On the other hand, blinds come in a few different styles (e.g. Venetian blinds, roller blinds) but from what we'd observed, the colours and materials are usually much more limited, and you don't really get the option for gradients, prints, or anything beyond solid blocks of colours if that's what you're looking for.
π‘ Noise levels: Curtains!
Honestly this was one thing we never considered when we were choosing blinds for our bedroom LOL.
We only realised it a couple of months into living in our home - the little plastic thingy attached to the cord (?? what is it called??) as well as the bottom metal part of the blinds tend to sway in the wind and will hit our metal window grilles.
This creates a very loud THUD THUD THUD sound (think metal on metal kind of hitting sound) that can happen whenever our windows are open and there're sudden strong bursts of wind (#monsoon season LOL). Frog doesn't mind it, but it wakes Duck up from her sleep and just annoys her in general.
The solution we have for this is just to lower the blinds all the way so the metal rod is lower than the window grilles. This works, but it also means we can't leave the blinds half open when we're sleeping for better ventilation.
π‘ Ease of cleaing: Blinds
Cleaning our blinds is easy - we lower them all the way and dust them with one of those furry dusters, and sometimes wipe down the blinds with a damp cloth. It's fast, simple and we even have our part-time helper do it sometimes.
Cleaning curtains on the other hand, is a HUGE CHORE AND UNDERTAKING. Removing the curtain hooks from the rail and then removing the curtains takes a long-time AND our washing machine only accomodates one panel at a time so we have to haul the whole thing off to the industrial washer at the laundromat....
Yes so if you feel like you need to get window coverings that are easy to clean, choose blinds 100%. unless you enjoy a good workout - then choose curtains HAHA.
(also disclaimer that our blinds are zebra blinds so the surface is flat and easy to wipe down - we assume Venetian blinds are not so easy to clean, and Shangri-la blinds.... well that's a whole different story altogether).
So... while it seems like curtains is a winner (except for the cleaning part... which I guess you could outsource if you really hated it and if finances are not a big issue)...
I gotta say I really like my blinds too! I feel like our home office looks very 'office-y' with the blinds for some reason - growing up I always envisioned myself working at a big open desk with a window and blinds beside me, so having this setup for WFH is quite a dream come true.
I also never had any blinds in my house growing up, so this has always been fascinating to me. We initially considered Venetian blinds too for the ultimate cosy vibe BUT we gave up after realising how much dust collects on each panel if one is not diligent with the dusting (we are definitely NOT LOL).
